Today was supposed to be the opening of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. In a recent interview the festival director Thierry Freamux seems to have relented to the idea the Cannes will not take place as a physical festival this year. It’s a major blow to the world of cinema and of fashion. But I am going to continue to make my wishes known for films that might have screened at the festival. Ana Lily Amirpour isn’t a director to overlook. She smashed the conventions of vampire movies and spaghetti westerns with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and did it again with the post-apocalyptic film The Bad Batch which debuted at the Venice Film Festival. With Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon, Amirpour has lined up her biggest cast yet, including Kate Hudson, Craig Robinson, and Korean actress Jun Jong-Seo, the breakout supporting star of 2018’s Cannes sensation Burning. With another original script from Amirpour, this time using the fantasy and adventure genres as her springboard, Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon turns on a young girl with magical and potentially volatile powers. After breaking out of a mental asylum, she sets out to make it on her own in New Orleans, where the film was shot on location and is, of course, every filmmaker’s playground for all things magical. Amirpour has yet to bring a film to Cannes, but with increased pressure on the festival to make room for women directors, especially diverse ones, it would seem like this is a perfect fit. Kate Hudson has ventured to Cannes a couple of times in the past, but always for parties and never to promote a film. At other film festivals Kate has owned the red carpet. I was really looking forward to seeing her take to the Croisette to promote a film. So I went shopping for two major runway moments for her to wear in Cannes. The first look I picked is for the films photocall. Couture in the daytime is something we don’t really see outside of Cannes, but as the unofficial motto of the festival is “go big or go home” why not right? I was looking for the perfect look for Kate to wear for the photocall I saw this black and white animal print Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2020 Couture one shoulder ruffled cocktail dress I thought it was perfect. It is dramatic and sexy perfect for Kate. A loose wavy faux bob, defined eyes, bright pink lips, a pair of iridescent aqua blue Christian Louboutin ‘So Kate’ snake embossed pointed toe pumps, and de Grisogono ‘Melody of Colours’ amethyst and turquoise drop earrings would definitely make this a major moment for Kate to wear for for the Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon photocall. Now for the premiere I went for sexy glam opting to put Kate in this nude tulle Ralph & Russo Spring 2019 Couture one shoulder column gown embellished with pearlescent gold and silver sequins in a leopard print design, featuring a white crêpe cady off-the-shoulder cape, finished with a crystal encrusted serpet. The look is gorgeous and I that Kate would rock it effortlessly. She can rock the cape for the red carpet, and then ditch it for ease when she heads into the Palais de Festivals to watch the screening. For the red carpet I would definitely keep the cape styling the look with a sleek updo, smokey eyes, matte rose pink lips, gold metallic leather Jimmy Choo ‘Dochas’ crystal trimmed ankle strap sandals, and a pair of 18k gold and white diamond de Grisogono fan earrings to really ensure she encapsulates sensual glamour from head to toe. This is my second wish for one of the newest L’Oreal Paris ambassadors Celine Dion. I was really looking forward to seeing her finally make her Cannes debut. I went for superb moments in simple silhouettes for Celine with two column style gowns. I went into the Armani Prive archives to find this navy strapless column gown with an inverted peplum with a metallic red panel on the stomach and a sweeping train from the Armani Prive Spring 2011 Couture collection. I loved this space age collection when it came down the runway and to this day I cannot believe this gorgeous gown hasn’t been snatched up for a red carpet yet. I feel like Celine would definitely be able to snatch it out of the archive and finally give it the red carpet moment that it deserves. Styling this gown with a sleek side parted updo, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of red Aquazzura ‘Panthere’ pointed toe cut out t-strap pumps, and statement Chopard Red Carpet Collection 2019 painted titanium set sapphire waterfall chandelier earrings would all but ensure that Celine Dion would have made my Best of Cannes list. Bollywood star Deepika Padukone always knows how to deliver chic moments on the red carpet. Last year she went for two HUGE moments wearing Dundas and Giambattista Valli. I went for a bold western couturier for my second wish for Deepika, but for this wish I wanted to go for a major traditional moment for Deepika with this sunset pink and creamsicle orange silver embroidered sari from Manish Malhotra. When she first started showing up in Cannes Deepika would always make sure she packed a traditional look, but last year she left it at home. This look would be fantastic for the Palais de Festivals and I know that it would make for a major traditional fashion moment for the Cannes Film Festival red carpet especially styled with a sleek updo, smokey eyes, soft pink glossy lips, a pair of simple light pink Alexander McQueen crystal embroidered ankle strap sandals, and MAJOR Lorraine Schwartz fringe earrings made up of over 100 carats of multicolored spinels and white diamonds. It honestly surprised me that Lily Aldridge has never made the trip out to the Cannes Film Festival. She has been a friend to the house of Bulgari for a while now and the company always has spokemodels on the festival red carpets. So I was hoping that with all the traveling that Lily has done for Bulgari in the last year that she would finally make the trip to promote the brand on the red carpet in Cannes. I would be really interested in seeing what she would bring to the festival. Usually the looks we see on the red carpet in Cannes are couture or from European fashion houses so seeing Lily bring an American label to Cannes would be awesome. I think this royal blue silk taffeta Oscar de la Renta Fall 2020 RTW strapless tufted high low ball gown which features a plunging neckline and a sweeping train. I can just see Lily dancing up red carpet in this gown having lots of fun. Style it with a sleek updo, smokey eyes, red lips, a pair of royal blue Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ viscose & silk ankle strap sandals, and a statement Bulgari High Jewelry ‘Queen of Pop’ white diamond, sapphire, and aquamarine collar necklace and I know it would be that this would be a super cool moment for Lily to bring to life on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.
