2020 Met Gala Red Carpet Wish List Part 24

In a press conference about the exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris during Paris Fashion Week Louis Vuitton creative director, and co-chair of this years Met Gala, Nicholas Ghesquiere said: “thanks to it, our creations are transformed into valuable cultural artifacts, wearable treasures that can continue their vital stories about who we were, who we are and where we are going” when talking about what an indispensable resource the Costume Institute archives are to designers. Labels with storied archives like Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Christian Dior, etc. all have archives that they personally hold, but the Met Museum have even more. Will designers be stopping by the Andrew Bolton’s office to get a golden ticket into the Met archive to look for inspiration for the looks they will send down the Met Gala red carpet? Only time will tell. Now one of those houses with a storied archive is Versace. I know they hold a whole archive of prints and creations from Gianni Versace and I have picked several looks from that archive for this years Met Gala red carpet. The look I’ve picked for Camila Cabello to wear for this years Met Gala comes from Donatella Versace’s own archives for Versace with this white silk and gold beaded strapless Atelier Versace Fall 1999 Couture gown which features a tiered wavy high low hem. This look is super fun and glamorous. Rock and roll princess vibes for days. Camila isn’t really one of my favorite people to see on the red carpet to be completely honest. More often than not I find myself putting Camila on the worst dressed list. BUT when Camila gets it right she gets it right. I do think that wearing this vintage Atelier Versace gown on this years Met Gala red carpet would definitely make sure that Camila is on her top form. Now where she can, and usually does, loose me is with her styling. This gown is such a statement all on its own that I would keep the styling super simple with a wavy half up half down updo, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of metallic gold Versace ‘Medusa’ studded ankle strap platform sandals, and Boucheron ‘Armoiries’ art nouveau inspired yellow gold and diamond hoop earrings to ensure Camila owns her first Met Gala red carpet. A bonus wish would see Camila walking the red carpet with her beau Shawn Mendes wearing a black double breasted Versace Fall 2020 RTW tuxedo with beaded detail on the lapels. If you are looking at this Miu Miu Fall 2020 RTW ensemble and the fact I want to see it on Gemma Chan and thinking that I’m crazy you definitely need to keep reading. As I said in my introduction designers use the archives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a reference for design all the time. So it just makes sense that at least one of my wishes reference a look that lives in the archives. I saw this white silver and blue crystal embellished skirt on the runway at the Miu Miu Fall 2020 RTW presentation and my first thought was how incredible it would look as a gown. A brown strapless Cristobal Balenciaga Fall 1950 Couture gown I had seen in the digital archives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art came into my mind. Using these embellishments on white silk crepe creating a strapless column gown and then drawing inspiration from the Balenciaga gown and typing a navy taffeta sash around the waist into a bow on the back whose tails turn into a train would definitely be a perfect way for Miu Miu to represent this years theme of “About Time: Fashion and Duration” on the red carpet. The embellishments are beautiful and the silhouette of the custom gown would be fantastic on Gemma. She knows how to deliver elegance on the red carpet and I really do believe she would make this a super regal moment on the Met Gala red carpet styled with a sleek 50’s inspired updo, defined eyes, deep red lips, a white Judith Leiber Couture ‘Cayman’ crocodile leather crystal clasp clutch, a pair of white Miu Miu crystal embellished strappy slingback sandals, and dazzling David Morris white diamond chandelier earrings. Since Paul Andrew took the reigns at Salvatore Ferragamo I have been loving everything that has come down the runway. Last year he dressed a host of cool kids on the Met Gala red carpet including Solange Knowles, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinheart, Pom Klementieff, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Frances Aaternir, Elizabeth Debicki, Taron Egerton, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. While I would love to see the Ferragamo dress several stars on this years red carpet I only have one wish. That is for Lashana Lynch to wear a customized version of this gold chain banded fringe Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2020 RTW dress which features a black fitted dress under the fringe with thick straps customized into a floor length gown. This look would give modern flapper vibes and I think that is something Lashana would be able to rock on the red carpet with effortless ease. Her short hair, smokey eyes with a gold liner, deep berry red lips, a gold art deco pattern Judith Leiber Couture ‘Swanson Gaia’ crystal embellished clutch, a pair of black leather and satin Salvatore Ferragamo strappy sandals, and a pair of antique circa 1830 mine cut diamond drop earrings from Fred Leighton would make sure Lashana’s Met Gala debut is all about the modern glamour.  Historically Tom Ford dresses one female for the Met Gala red carpet. Over the years his choice in muse has ranged from Gemma Chan and Amal Clooney to Andrea Riseborough and Lara Stone to Rita Ora and Joan Smalls. I started thinking maybe Tom could dress a couple for this years Met Gala he showed his mens and womenswear together and was quoted saying “The core ethos of my work has never wavered and that is to make both men and woman the most beautiful versions of themselves.” He has never dressed a couple, but I am really excited about my wishes for Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas to bring looks from the Tom Ford Fall 2020 RTW collection to life on this years red carpet. Let’s start with Priyanka. I have been in love with this silver Tom Ford Fall 2020 RTW velvet bow embellished crystal chainmail gown which features a slim fit, column silhouette, cutout detail at chest, halter neckline, and a front slit since the moment I first saw it. The gown definitely fits the idea of timeless glamour which I think is how many will interpret this year’s theme. With a price tag of a whopping $64,500 this gown NEEDS a major moment on the Met Gala red carpet. I think the gown would hug all of Priyanka’s curves beautifully. She would ooze sexual glamour on the red carpet wearing this gown with old Hollywood waves, smokey eyes, matte red lips, black velvet Tom Ford crystal embellished ankle strap sandals, and a pair of major dazzling white diamond Chopard Red Carpet Collection chandelier earrings. Now I want to see Priyanka walk this red carpet with her hubby Nick Jonas wearing this black and white abstract print peak lapel tuxedo jacket paired with the white tuxedo shirt, big black bow tie, and black tuxedo pants the look was styled with on the runway. Now while a pair of good Tom Ford shoes would be expected I would instead want to see Nick wear a pair of black patent leather Christian Louboutin ‘Dandelion Tassel’ dress loafers with this tuxedo. Finishing the look with a bit of sparkle via a Chopard ‘L.U.C. Quattro Torbillion’ diamond encrusted watch with a black alligator leather strap would ensure this is one super sexy couple on this red carpet. I am trusting Zoey Deutch with one of my favorite gowns from the Spring 2020 Couture collection. This is not a task I give her lightly, but after she turned one of my favorite looks from the Fall 2019 Couture collection really come to life on the red carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party earlier this year I figured I would take a chance on her. I LOVE this dazzling black Valentino Spring 2020 Couture strapless gown which features a ruffled neckline and peplum, an a-line skirt, sheer pleating, and gold sunburst beaded embellishments throughout. It was one gown I really thought we were going to see on Oscar night, but since it wasn’t snatched up I feel like it has to be the perfect moment for Zoey to bring to life on the Met Gala red carpet. She brings effortless glam to the red carpet, but knows how to dazzle as well and that is exactly what we are going to see if she donned this gown. Styling this gown with a sleek updo, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of black Valentino ‘Upflair’ feather tassel strappy sandals, and Wonders of Nature black diamond bead tassel earrings would definitely make sure that Zoey delivers this moment perfectly.
