From Lady Gaga’s four wardrobe changes last year to Rihanna’s internet-breaking yellow Guo Pei cape gown in 2015, the Met Gala has long been the most anticipated red carpet event of the year with the biggest names in music, film, fashion and entertainment going all out with their costumes to match the annual ball’s theme. This year the Met Gala theme is “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” The event will mark the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 150th anniversary and will be partly inspired by Virginia Woolf and the theories of the early-20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson. How this years theme will be interpreted is yet to be seen. Will stars go timeless or will there be a lot of gowns that look like clocks? I guess only time will tell. Billy Porter showed up on last years Met Gala red carpet as the sun god carried in The Blonds on a litter carried by six shirtless men. He then showed off his wings as he twirled up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I expected Billy to bring the drama to last years red carpet as he does help define what “Camp” style is. I definitely want to see Billy rock this years Met Gala red carpet as well. I feel like Billy will of course still be delivering a superb fashion moment. Billy has been front row at Richard Quinn shows for the last two seasons and when I was thinking of the perfect person to wear this black and silver crystal embellished houndstooth pattern suit which features a fitted jacket and a bell bottom pants from the Richard Quinn Fall 2020 RTW collection it just clicked that it should be Billy. He would definitely bring this look to life styling it with a black or white button down shirt, hist favorite pair of black Rick Owens ‘KISS’ platform chunky heel boots, and a black lace print Stephen Jones Millinery ‘Derby’ with a net veil. This years Met Gala can serve as the celebration for the Met’s 150th anniversary and the farewell party for Jean Paul Gaultier. Earlier this year, on the date of his couture show in Paris the designer announced it would be his last show. With the future of the house still up in the air I would love to see Gaultier aplenty on this red carpet. In fact I’ve picked 3 looks from the designer for this years Met Gala red carpet. Two from his final collection and one from an archive collection. I’ve picked this black tulle high low gown which features intricate beading and plumage on one shoulder for FKA Twigs. The singer has loved herself some Jean Paul Gaultier on the red carpet, mostly vintage. I think that she would make sure this look is rock and roll glamour defined and I think she would definitely be able to really sell this look to me especially if styled with a sleek yet edgy updo, defined eyes, red lips, a pair of black crystal embellished Rene Caovilla ‘Galaxia’ mesh calf high peep toe boots, and MAJOR Yeprem jewels including a statement ‘Chevalier’ white diamond ear cuff, and a matching ‘Chevalier’ white diamond hand ring (worn on opposite sides.) Penelope Cruz has only walked the Met Gala red carpet twice. The black and white vintage Chanel Couture gown that she wore last year would easily fit in perfectly on this years red carpet. I decided once again to dive into the Chanel archives for the perfect gown for Penelope to wear on this years red carpet. The Chanel Fall 2009 Couture collection is one of my favorite Chanel collections ever. There have been several major red carpet moments to come out of that collection, but this black strapless gown which features a velvet crystal and ruffle detailed peplum bodice, a sequined tulle column underskirt, and a beaded tulle overskirt has never been worn. It perplexes me. This gown is super glamorous and I would love to see Penelope pull this gown out of the archive and finally give it the red carpet moment it deserves. The gown definitely fits the theme of this years gala perfectly. Now it might be a long shot since it is officially part of the history of Chanel, but I would love to see a dramatic layered tulle train added to this look tacked under the peplum of the gown. Old Hollywood waves, smokey eyes, bold red lips, a black lambskin and black metal chain Chanel quilted clutch, a pair of black Gianvito Rossi ‘Portofino’ clear PVC strap sandals, and a statement white diamond Chopard Red Carpet Collection ‘Superb’ collar necklace would definitely bring this look to life and give this gown the red carpet both it and Penelope deserve. I spent a lot of time in the process of pulling these wishes together going through as many couture archives from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s as possible. So sprinkled throughout my wishes you are going to find some amazing vintage couture runway moments I would love to see on the red carpet. The Versace archive gave me a lot of inspiration. I’ve picked several moments from the label over the years for the Met Gala red carpet. So I spent DAYS trying to figure out who should be the person to pull this silver pleated and draped lame Atelier Versace Spring 1994 Couture ball gown which features a plunging neckline. The gown is the perfect balance of sexy and princess. Finally I thought of Stella Maxwell wearing this gown on the Met steps and knew that it was the perfect match. She oozes sexy sophistication and I think that is exactly what is needed to bring this look to life on the Met Gala red carpet. A loose curly updo, smokey eyes, soft nude lips, a pair of silver glitter Christian Louboutin ‘Cathy’ peep toe platform d’orsay ankle strap pumps, and dazzling white diamond de Grisogono fabric drape inspired drop earrings would ensure that Stella oozes sexy glamour on the Met Gala red carpet. I also dove into designer archives for Zoe Kravitz. Originally I had picked a red latex moment from the Saint Laurent Fall 2020 RTW collection for the Saint Laurent spokesmodel, but then I was scrolling through Instagram when I saw a YSL look from when YSL actually designed YSL. It inspired me to dive into the Yves St Laurent archive for Zoe. As it happens Zoe actually wore a vintage YSL look last year at the Met Gala. It was chic, but nothing in comparison to this bold red strapless Yves Saint Laurent Spring 1996 Couture gown which features a feathered peplum and a column skirt it is nothing. This gown gives me LIFE. It screams glamour and I believe that Zoe would be able to bring this gown to life like few others could. I would love to see Zoe style this look with a chic pixie, winged eyes, soft nude lips, a pair of red leather Saint Laurent ‘Kiki’ pointed toe pumps, and dazzling Lorraine Schwartz jewels including a pair of pink sapphire and ruby drop earrings and a statement orange sapphire and pink sapphire cocktail ring to really ensure that this couture gown gets the red carpet moment it deserves.
