You are in for a treat this weekend as I give you two-a-days both today and tomorrow! There are just too many amazing looks, but off the runway and custom, that I would love to see brought to life on the Met Gala red carpet. Some of my lists feature heavily on very over the top ‘Camp’ looks, but in the list you are about to read through the ‘Camp’ elements are a little more subtle (at least for the most part.) I know I have been preaching about go big or go home when it comes to this years Met Gala theme, but I am also realistic in knowing that not everyone will wear big gowns, lots of ruffles, feathers, bright colors, and exorbitant embellishments. Even if I want them too. So this list is balanced with simpler styles and the over the top styles I wish would wallpaper this red carpet. Kicking things off is one of the simpler looks of this list. On every Met Gala ted carpet that Bella Hadid has attended (which is every year since 2015) she has only worn a black look (be it a cocktail dress, gown, or even a catsuit.) I decided that I wasn’t going to try and push those boundaries. While Bella wears bright colors like red, lime, and hot pink incredibly well I have a sneaking suspicion that she will once again don a black creation for this years red carpet. I decided to take inspiration for the custom gown I created for Bella from the Burberry by Riccardo Tisci Fall 2019 RTW collection and the layered sheer paneled bustier cocktail dress and turned it into this black silk crepe one sleeve gown, which features an asymmetrical neckline, fit to flare skirt, and a sweeping train. Bella doesn’t really do big over the top looks on the red carpet ever. Her style is much sleeker and always with a hint of sexy and I definitely think that this look fits her usual aesthetic, but the sparkling gold and gunmetal sequin panels on the bodice and the rock crystal trimming definitely add that subtle not to the ‘Camp’ theme. I wouldn’t even go for drama in the styling adding a sleek high bun updo, defined eyes, antique rose pink lips, black Burberry knot detail embossed leather sandals, and a pair of chic Bulgari High Jewelry diamond and emerald drop earrings to really keep this look sleek and sexy for Bella to deliver on this red carpet. Chadwick Boseman knows how to bring the extra to the red carpet and does so typically wearing brands like Louis Vuitton, Versace, and Givenchy. He is one of the few men who have worn off the runway men’s couture and every time he does I get really excited. I was actually out grocery shopping when I saw that Versace had released the images of the Atelier Versace Spring 2019 Couture collection and as I was grabbing my peanut butter and jelly off the shelf and scrolling through the images I got so super excited to see that this season Donatella too included menswear in her couture collection. I saw this 3D embellished jewelry patterned peak lapel tuxedo and it was immediate something I reserved for the Met Gala, and it was no question that it was Chadwick for whom I was putting it on reserve. I know that he has the effortless sense of style to make this really visual look work on this red carpet. I would swap the embellished t-shirt from the runway for a collarless black button down adding a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Dandelion Mix’ silver and gold spike studded loafers to add just another layer to this ‘Camp’ list.I don’t know if the Fanning sisters are going to be on the red carpet at the Met Gala this year, but I sure hope so because this theme was made for them and their stylist Samantha McMillen. Dakota Fanning is the less over the top of the two sisters, but I definitely think that she could still hang with the best of them on this red carpet. I went for big volume for her with this white Tomo Koizumi Fall 2019 RTW strapless ballgown which features yellow and purple detail around the waist and a completely ruffled construction. Dakota doesn’t typically do all this drama, but honestly this dress was in a wish list waiting for a person next to the dress that I picked for her sister Elle, and when I was looking at it contemplating who should rock this gown on this red carpet it just clicked. Now in the past when Dakota and Elle have both attended the Met Gala they have done so wearing the same designer. This time I decided to do looks that are different designers but still compliment each other for the sisters. I would finish this look for Dakota rather simply with a sleek bun updo, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a white acrylic Miu Miu rock crystal embellished clutch, a pair of white Miu Miu metallic trimmed patent leather sandals, and chic vintage platinum diamond drop earrings from Beladora. Now this theme was definitely made for Elle Fanning. She is a fearless unicorn who isn’t afraid of color, volume, or embellishments. It made it really fun to search for the perfect look for Elle to bring to life on this red carpet. Since big brands like Dior, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren are reportedly sitting out this year I want some of the big emerging talent out there to get love on the Met Gala red carpet this year. Now Elle’s stylist Samantha McMillen was recently named the Queen of Custom in The Hollywood Reporter’s power stylists issue. I would typically expect Sam to pick custom looks for this red carpet, but when there are option like this teal and pink Richard Quinn Fall 2019 RTW trapeze dress which features a bow detail neckline, intricate beaded floral embroidery, and layers of petticoats why create another look? This look screams Elle and I know very few who could really make it work on the red carpet. I would not have Elle wear the look with the black latex bodysuit the look was paired with on the runway. Still not sure I totally understand that. The flirty feminine nature of this dress is definitely on board with the ‘Camp’ theme and I would continue to add drama with a pair of two tone pink satin Roger Vivier ‘Rose Button’ sandals, a sleek 60’s inspired updo, winged eyeliner with twiggy lashes, rose pink lips, and a pair of vintage mid-century nautilus style diamond drop earrings from Beladora to ensure that Elle owns this theme from head to toe. When it came to picking a look for Jennifer Connelly I knew there was really no other options for her than Louis Vuitton. Since Nicolas Ghesquiere took the reigns at LV Jennifer has been a loyal ambassador to the label. I honestly cannot remember the last time that we saw Jennifer wear anything that wasn’t Louis Vuitton. Now honestly I had a bit of trouble creating custom LV ideas that fit the ‘Camp’ theme. Even now as I look at this custom gown which features a white caplet, a gold bustier, belted waist, and black sequined skirt reminds me more of last years Catholic theme than it does ‘Camp,’ but I don’t really think LV has ever really stuck to the theme. I more picked this gown based on Jennifer’s sense of style and Nicolas’s aesthetic than I did with the theme. A black and gold Louis Vuitton ‘Petite Malle’ epi leather box clutch, a pair of black Louis Vuitton ‘Call Back’ classic monogrammed leather ankle strap sandals, a sleek high bun, smokey eyes, and dark red lips would make this an incredibly chic moment for Jennifer to wear on this red carpet. Sienna Miller could also easily be a member of the Louis Vuitton crew again this year, but honestly I want to see her bring another label to this red carpet as I am sure there will be plenty of LV. I was flipping through the Altuzarra Fall 2019 RTW collection looking for details that could create a great custom look for the Met Gala and I fell in love with a one sleeve mini dress which has a colorful paisley print decorated with mini sequins creating an ombré effect asymmetrically draped and I thought it was a great starting point. It was a little harder to edit my whole idea out, but what my girl Evita from For The Love Of Red Carpet Fashion definitely gets the point across. I want to see that mini dress used as the inspiration but I would take the full sleeve off making it a one shoulder gown adding a crystal embellished floral corsage with a tassel detail on the shoulder taking the draping and keeping it going in a basket weave style to the floor. What we couldn’t edit was a train. I want to see Joseph Altuzarra add a really dramatic train in that sequined embellished paisley to this gown. Without the train this gown would be perfect for a movie premiere or the SAG Awards, but add that train and BAM you have a Met Gala gown. Altuzarra always does amazing custom looks for the Met and I definitely think that this would be another he could add to those ranks. The look would be a truly winning style moment for Sienna especially if paired with a loose romantic updo, smokey eyes, soft glossy dark rose pink lips, a black Louis Vuitton x Grace Coddington ‘Petite Malle’ cat printed logomania clutch, black satin and velvet Roger Vivier ‘Viv Bling’ plateau sandals, and a selection of vintage Van Cleef & Arpels jewels including a pair of gold set diamond and sapphire ear clips, an intricate gold bangle with sapphires and white diamonds, a gold herringbone bracelet with a sapphire clasp, and another gold bangle inlaid with cabochon sapphires and pearls.
The 2019 Met Gala will take place on the first Monday in May: May 6, 2019.
