Every year I am always excited to see all of the new faces that come to the red carpet. While I always will get excited about the likes of Diane Kruger, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o, and Lady Gaga but I know that new stars help bring variety to the red carpet. I usually get an idea of who might make my Best Newcomer award a year in advance when I post my One’s To Watch award (which is coming in a few days) but this year I had no idea who my winner was. I really had no idea who Kiki Layne was ahead of the draped hot pink satin Gucci sarong strapless midi dress she wore for the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of If Beale Street Could Talk. Unlike most stars she was right into the heat of fashion rocking major brands including Gucci, Prada, Valentino, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, and Miu Miu on the red carpet. After the raspberry pink Ralph & Russo Couture strapless high low a-line gown that Kiki wore for the Academy Governors Awards I said that Kiki could be the next Lupita Nyong’o. I’m not hearing the same Oscar buzz for Kiki as we did for Lupita, but I definitely think that we will see her on the red carpets all through awards season. Will she bring a wide range of looks over the course of awards season? If the last 4 months have anything to say it then yes. She is my Best Newcomer, and definitely one still to watch.
