One of the last major red carpets of the year is the LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) Art + Film Gala. It could almost be categorized as the Met Gala of LA. But done on a much smaller scale. The gala raises money for the museum and celebrates a prominent artist and a prominent filmmaker. This year the event will honor American photographer Catherine Opie and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and as usual the event is being presented by Gucci. That being said almost everyone who walks this red carpet does so wearing some sort of Gucci ensemble. The red carpet draws stars who are prominent in the art community, Gucci ambassadors, and stars of films directed by that years honoree. Looking at who usually walks the red carpet in addition to stars of Guillermo del Toro’s movies I would say we are in for quite the red carpet this year. Dakota Johnson is a Gucci ambassador and she does her job rather well. I often find things to nitpick in her red carpet looks, but that happens less (typically) when she is wearing a Gucci design. Dakota has walked the red carpet at the LACMA Art + Film Gala since 2013 (except for 2016 which she missed) and I am expecting that since her film Suspiria will hit theaters the night before. When Dakota wears Gucci gowns on the red carpet she is usually wearing something custom, so I went to the runways and found details I liked and pieced together a gorgeous custom gown for her to wear for the LACMA Gala red carpet. I looked at the pink polka dotted silk ruffled vest of a mixed print dress from the Spring 2019 RTW collection and isolated it pairing it with a matching pleated chiffon skirt to really make this a simple, bohemian take on glamour. I really do believe that this is something we could see Alessandro Michele churn out for a red carpet. It is easy and glamorous and that is why I thought it was perfect for Dakota. Simple pink satin Gucci ankle strap pumps, a pulled back hairstyle, defined eyes, nude glossy lips, and a pair of Cartier diamond and ruby drop earrings would all ensure this look is perfection. Naomi Campbell usually is a guest at the LACMA Art + Film Gala, but unlike most she does not wear Gucci on the red carpet. In fact she is the only one on this wish list that I didn’t pick some sort of a Gucci moment for. I wanted to go with one of Naomi’s favorite designers for this red carpet because I love this ice white silk crepe Ralph & Russo Fall 2018 Couture column gown which features a sheer crystal chain mail bodice embellished with crystal micro xilions and a sculptured overlay of devoré ostrich feathers and I really do think that Naomi would really bring this gown to life on the red carpet. The gown is a really statement moment and one I think many would be overwhelmed by. That feathered bodice is definitely something I think that only someone with real presence could make work and the iconic supermodel definitely has that kind of presence. I didn’t keep the look totally devoid of Gucci though. I would style the gown with a pair of silver strappy Gucci sandals. Add a sleek center-parted hairstyle, dramatic winged smokey eyes, bold red lips, and a pair of Harry Winston diamond cluster earrings and I know that Naomi will slay this red carpet.Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is another frequent guest on the red carpet at the LACMA Art + Film Gala. She always delivers really beautiful moments and I am really excited to see what she will (most likely) bring to the red carpet this year. Typically she picks a gown off the runway for this red carpet, but I feel like there wasn’t anything that came down the runways from Gucci that I want to see Rosie bring to life. So instead I went the custom route for her as well. I took the red and black art deco beading of the dress that opened the Gucci Spring 2019 RTW show and turned it into the batwing bodice which features slashed sleeves and
a plunging neckline paired with a black fully beaded skirt with a dramatic train. When my custom gown photo editor sent this to me I fell in love and knew I would use it for red carpet wishes and I believe that Rosie would rock this gown on this red carpet especially when paired with a sleek updo, defined eyes, soft pink lips, red Gucci braided leather sandals, and modern David Morris diamond & ruby chandelier earrings. As the first lady of Kering, the powerhouse fashion company that owns Gucci, Salma Hayek is the only person on this list that I could say without a doubt will be on this red carpet. I go back and forth with how I feel about the relationship between Salma and Gucci. Since Alessandro Michele has taken over the brand it is pretty much all that Salma wears, save for (very little) McQueen, Saint Laurent, and Altuzarra. All of which are also owned by Kering. I often think that the over thought designs Alessandro dreams up just don’t work for Salma very often, but I am sure that she will be on this red carpet wearing a Gucci design. While I didn’t go the runway route for her, I also didn’t go the custom route for Salma either. I found this black Gucci v-neck gown which features trumpet sleeves, embroidered bodice, a-line skirt on the virtual racks of Bergdorf Goodman and was instantly sold as it being the perfect gown for Salma. I think that the shape of gown would flatter all of Salma’s famous curves. This gown is inspired by a cocktail dress that went down the very odd Gucci Fall 2018 RTW collection runway, and the gown is definitely better than its runway sibling. A black Alexander McQueen ‘Queen and King’ kiss lock box clutch, old Hollywood waves, defined eyes, glossy red lips, a pair of black Gucci ‘Ilse’ bow sandals, and Fred Leighton diamond and pink sapphire drop earrings would ensure that Salma is on top of her style game. Zoe Saldana is a frequent guest on art gala red carpets. She has been to MOCA Gala’s, the Met, Hammer Museum Gala’s, MoMA Gala’s, as well as many LACMA Art + Film Gala’s. I really want to see her on this years red carpet as well. I believe that Zoe is one of the few who could make this black strip gown covered in mirrored discs to life on the red carpet. It is definitely something very difficult to pull off but I know that Zoe is one of the few who would make it come to life with ease. She would bring and effortless glamour to this look and I think that with a sleek high ponytail, defined eyes, nude lips, and a pair of simple black Gucci patent leather sandals that this would be an absolutely major moment on this red carpet.
The 2018 LACMA Art + Film Gala will take place on Saturday November 3, 2018.
