The Favourite is an awards season favorite and I am really excited to see what more will come from the festival tour that the film has been taking. I opened with an amazing gala premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and won Olivia Coleman the Best Actress trophy at the festival as well, and now is slated to open the 2018 New York Film Festival. Usually premieres at the New York Film Festival are a little more mixed. It isn’t the couture fest that we see at Venice and TIFF is even more of a mix. Chic gowns and cocktail moments dominate the NYFF red carpets typically. We typically see Jason Wu, Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, and Valentino on the red carpets at this festival and typically they are short. The last time Emma Stone was at the New York Film Festival was when she premiered Birdman at the festivals closing night. Now she will be opening the festival with her next Oscar contender The Favourite. Since her Louis Vuitton campaign was announced she has basically exclusively worn LV on the red carpet, and to be honest despite all of the custom gowns I have designed and all the runway looks I have saved there wasn’t a single look I really wanted to see Emma wear on this red carpet, so instead I went outside of the brand to one of my favorite collections of Spring 2019 RTW. I love when Emma gives a good vintage inspired moment on the red carpet so when I saw this ice blue Richard Quinn Spring 2019 RTW silk flapper dress which features a v-neckline, heavily beaded bodice, and a black feathered hem I immediately thought of what a good moment it would be. Before her LV contract I would have easily picked this dress for Emma without hesitation, but now I feel like a wish like this is falling on walled off ears. I didn’t completely kick LV to the curb opting to pair this dress with a black and silver ‘Petite Malle’ clutch and a pair of black ‘Black Bird’ platform sandals. A finger wave updo, defined eyes, pink lips, and a pair of Chopard Red Carpet Collection diamond and sapphire drop earrings all would ensure that this moment is nothing but glamour.Like I said Olivia Coleman won the Best Actress prize at the 2018 Venice Film Festival and while I didn’t know what her style was before the premiere and awards ceremony I feel like I know it a little better now. For the Venice premiere Olivia wore a black Stella McCartney caped jumpsuit and she wore an red Antonio Berardi asymmetrical fitted gown for the awards gala. So I spent hours searching all of the typical British brands and wasn’t thrilled with anything, but then I went back to the Fall 2018 RTW collection from Jenny Packham and saw this simple, yet chic, fitted long sleeve gown which features a v-neckline, gem embellished shoulder detail, and maxi silhouette and it just clicked. I was going to go with black for Emma, but since it was even harder for me to pick a look for Olivia than it was for Emma I went back to the drawing board. I went really simple with the styling too adding her short pixie, defined eyes, red lips, a black Gianvito Rossi ‘Bella’ clutch, and a pair of black Gianvito Rossi ‘Irina’ pumps to really allow for Olivia to continue to deliver very chic and glamorous moments on the red carpet. I was hoping that Taylor Swift was going to jet off to Venice an sneak into the premiere of The Favourite since her boyfriend Joe Alwyn is one of the stars of this film. She didn’t. So I’m not overly hopeful that she will be at the films premiere at the New York Film Festival, but since she doesn’t have a tour date on the night of this premiere I would love to see her support Joe in NYC. I picked this tangerine orange J. Mendel Spring 2019 RTW sweetheart neckline gown which features a fine pleated corseted bodice, metallic print speckled all over, and a sheer pleated skirt for her to wear if she did sneak into this premiere. It is chic and glamorous and I definitely think that it is the perfect bold plus one moment that I want to see Taylor have on this red carpet. A romantic updo, defined eyes, dark red lips, a gold glitter Jimmy Choo ‘Ellipse’ clutch, gold Jimmy Choo ‘Lane’ sandals, and a pair of mandarin garnet and diamond IVY New York drop earrings all would add the perfect finishing touches to this ensemble.
The 2018 New York Film Festival opens September 28, 2018 and runs through October 14, 2018.
