“One step at a time. One hope then another. Who knows where this road may go. Back to who I was. On to find my future. Things my heart still needs to know. Yes, let this be a sign! Let this road be mine. Let it lead me to my past, and bring me home at last!” These lyrics from the animated film and Broadway musical Anastasia really made me think of the Zuhair Murad Fall 2018 Couture collection which took “a journey to the past” to the time of Nicolas II and Alexandra Romanov the final Czar and Czarina of Russia (whose daughter inspired the fairy tale.) Rich reds, blues, and greens and metallic silvers and golds all meshed incredibly well together to come up with a collection that meshed all of the typical codes of Zuhair Murad including sex appeal, drama, and glamour. When talking with Vogue Runway backstage before the show the designer said “The czars and czarinas had famously luxurious taste.” Also noted in show notes were the real and the fictional including Elizabeth of Russia and Anna Karenina. The collection didn’t come across as costume-y though, and it very well could have. The collection was a more grown up version of what we have come to expect from Zuhair Murad collections. The sexy looks were more demure. It wasn’t all in your face like we are used to seeing from the brand. I won’t say that it wasn’t still there, but it wasn’t as in your face. I feel like that could draw stars who we don’t often see wearing Zuhair Murad on the red carpet to the brand. There are even more stars that I can picture wearing this collection than those who are mentioned in my wishes above. Eva Longoria, Alessandra Ambrosio, Izabel Goulart, Celine Dion, Nina Dobrev, Fan Bingbing, Sonam Kapoor, Elle Fanning, Evan Rachel Wood, Rachel Brosnahan, Aja Naomi King, Adriana Lima, Jasmine Tookes, Deepika Padukone, Jenna Dewan, Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Emmy Rossum, Camilla Belle, Leslie Mann, Naomie Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Sara Sampaio, Chanel Iman, Chrissy Teigan, Rachel McAdams, January Jones, Saoirse Ronan, Amy Adams, Danai Gurira, Jessica Biel, Gwen Stefani, Winnie Harlow, Kristen Wiig, Gal Gadot, Ruby Rose, Olivia Culpo, Mila Kunis, Hailey Baldwin, Krysten Ritter, Lily Collins, Marion Cotillard, Kristen Stewart, and Catherine Zeta Jones also come to mind when looking at some of the incredibly glamorous gowns and cocktail ensembles that came down this runway.
