Queens of Disco: Ralph & Russo Fall 2018 Couture

While disco music wasn’t actually on the soundtrack for the Ralph & Russo Fall 2018 Couture show it definitely should have been. The only thing I could think of as I flipped through the photos of this collection the other night was Donna Summer. As the late disco queen said “She works hard for the money.
So hard for it, honey.” And what better way to spend that money than with bright and glamorous fashion? This collection was a bit of a departure for Tamara Ralph & Michael Russo. The duo for the last several seasons have focused on light and airy collections with pale color palettes. I was hoping for a new direction this season as I was staring to get board with seeing the same pale gowns come down the runway, and they delivered just that. Whites, silvers, pale pinks, and blacks were paired with neon yellow, blues, and purples to really keep that bright vibe of the 80’s alive. While I cite Donna Summer and Diana Ross as the inspiration for this collection it is actually a celebration of the universe and art de vivre of icon and femme du monde, Jacqueline de Ribes, the French aristocrat, designer, fashion icon, businesswoman, producer and philanthropist. The collection encapsulates the zeitgeist of the eighties and the golden age of couture through the frame of the renowned Comtesse. Channeling splendor, frivolity and the palette of the era, this season utilities an array of rich tones in the form of color blocking; from bejeweled red liquid velvet column gowns and bronze faille moirée cocktail dresses, to royal purple chiffon paired with mustard yellow or scarlet red double duchess draping. Couture as both fantasy and reality reign true as lightness, convenience and transparency of vision are prominent throughout, serving as a reminder that couture is art to be worn and that style as statement, attitude and personality, is intrinsically connected to the individual. If a fictional character were to depict the mood of the collection I would say that Alexis Carrington from Dynasty would be all over these looks. On the runway the London based couture brand opted to style their luxurious gowns and cocktail ensembles with shoes and bags designed in house and jewelry from another London based brand the jeweler David Morris. The drama and glamour that we are used to seeing from the Ralph & Russo woman was still very much in play, but I feel like this collection will also stand out to a new set of stars as well. Cast a wider net you could say. Stars and stylists who are looking for looks for everything that happens during the fall from film festivals to the Emmy’s to the VMA’s and beyond will definitely find options within this collection. In addition to the stars already named I can see Taylor Swift, Sara Sampaio, Winnie Harlow, Alessandra Ambrosio, Mandy Moore, Araya A. Hargate, Aishwarya Rai, Deepika Padukone, Alison Brie, Tracee Ellis Ross, Karlie Kloss, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Rita Ora, Beyonce, Lupita Nyong’o, Maria Borges, and more snatching looks off this runway for their red carpet moments.
