One of the always anticipated events of the Cannes Film Festival is a sidebar event hosted by festival sponsor Chopard. Every year the famed jewelry brand awards two rising film stars with the Trophee Chopard. It honors two young talents, one female and one male, who are showing exemplary talent early in their career. Some of the past laureates have included Audrey Tautou, Gael Garcia Bernal, Diane Kruger, John Boyega, Lea Seydoux, Shailene Woodley, and Anya Taylor Joy (among many others) and while we haven’t been made privy to who will be awarded with this year we do know the exemplary actress who will hand out the awards and I decided to throw the jury of the festival in (even though they don’t have any say in who wins this trophy.)Diane Kruger received the Trophee Chopard back in 2003 presented to her by French actress Isabelle Adjani and this year she will be on hand to present the newest group of young stars with their honors. I always love a really great moment from Diane and I feel like for this occasion that she will once again pull out all the stops. I had originally picked the Chanel Couture gown that Penelope Cruz wore for the Cannes opening dinner (which made me feel very sad) but since that had to change I went a little more out there. We have seen Diane wear rising British talent Michael Halpern’s designs once before wearing a sequin mini for the NYC screening of In The Fade and I thought why not turn back to the brand for this red carpet. It was actually on the red carpet at this party last year that thanks to Marion Cotillard and I feel like his fun glamour is perfect for a Cannes Film Festival red carpet. I did modify a Halpern dress taking a strapless electric blue silk, polyamide, polyester asymmetric textured silk bustier mini dress which features a dramatic train attached at the hip and modify it into a gown. Could Diane rock the mini dress? Yes, but on the heels of her mini dress gown by Prabal Gurung Atelier at the Met Gala this past Monday I think the gown would be a great change of pace. This gown is nothing but glamour and I really think that Diane could totally sell this look for me to bring to the red carpet. I think that with a 40’s inspired updo, defined eyes, a pair of nude and PVC Gianvito Rossi ‘Helmut’ sandals, and a statement Chopard diamond and sapphire collar necklace that this ensemble would be head to toe perfection on Diane. Ava DuVernay has kept a pretty low profile so far this festival. We haven’t seen her out and about on the red carpets at the festival since the opening ceremony and I am hoping she will bring out some of her chic modest glamour. I honestly don’t think that anyone but Ava could take this pink and black Armani Prive Fall 2017 Couture gown which features a long sleeve crystal embellished top and printed layered tulle gown and make it look not mumsy. I do believe that Ava has the right ‘it’ factor to really make this a chic moment. I think she would probably ditch the runways belt bring the skirt up a little to hit her natural waist, but I would really love to keep the feathered stole to add just a little bit of extra to this look. With her signature half up half down hairstyle, defined eyes, pink lips, black Gianvito Rossi point d’esprit pumps, and the requisite Chopard jewels through a pair of statement Rihanna Loves Chopard multi jewel floral chandelier earrings I know that Ava would own this look on this red carpet. Cate Blanchett has never received the Trophee Chopard, but in 2014 she was the one who awarded Logan Lerman and Adèle Exarchopoulos with their honors. That year Cate wore two equally gorgeous gowns. For the Ceremony she gave Victorian inspired moody glamour wearing Valentino and then eye popping color and sparkle in Armani Prive for the party that follows. As the president of this years jury I went for a chic party look for Cate to rock this year with this metallic dark yellow gold Poiret Fall 2018 RTW midi gown which features a crumpled fabric, twisted knot waist, asymmetrical voluminous cap sleeves, and an asymmetrical hem. Cate loves to support new talent and with the relaunch of this brand I think that Cate would definitely be drawn to the looks from this collection and I’ve thought from the moment I first saw this gown on the runway that Cate would be a perfect candidate to really bring it to life on the red carpet. Add a sleek updo, smokey eyes, nude lips, a nude Rodo crystal embellished clutch, green Aquazzura ‘Morena’ suede sandals, and statement Chopard white and yellow diamond and emerald floral drop earrings would all make this another beautiful moment for Cate on the red carpets of the festival. I can honestly say that I am really surprised that Kristen Stewart wasn’t awarded the Trophee Chopard early in her career, but I feel like she just could step out to celebrate this years laureates. Kristen has also kept a pretty low profile this festival. She has attended one party (hosted by Chanel) since the festival opened, but I am hoping that she will bring a lot more to the red carpets over the course of the festival. For the Trophee Chopard party I went with a dark and sexy look with this black crystal encrusted Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2018 Couture crystal encrusted gown which features a large cutout on the bodice and a daring split. This is 100% something I think that Kristen would own on the red carpet and I think that she would really be able to own this gown on the red carpet. Edging it up with a statement Chopard Red Carpet Collection feathered collar necklace, a faux hawk, defined eyes, nude lips, and a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Guiptik’ lace peep to sling back booties would all ensure that Kristen really owns this look.Lea Seydoux was awarded the Trophee Chopard back in 2009 before she was a big fashionista. Since then she has come back to celebrate fellow new laureates wearing Elie Saab in 2015. I have a feeling that the member of this years jury member will be on the red carpet at the party celebrating this years set of laureates as well. So far this festival Lea has brought the sexy glam to the festivals red carpets wearing custom Louis Vuitton looks including a gorgeous sheer gown and a tuxedo inspired mini dress. I know that Lea will most likely stick to her Louis Vuitton contract over the course of the festival, but I would love to see her bring something new to the red carpet. I think that this black Givenchy Fall 2018 Couture strapless cocktail dress which features a dramatic bow on the neckline and a pleated trapeze silhouette would be a really chic moment for Lea to bring to this red carpet. I don’t think gowns are the requisite for this red carpet, and I think that with the right styling that this would definitely be one of the chic looks for Lea to bring to this years festival red carpet. I didn’t totally shun Louis Vuitton picking a statement emerald green ‘Petite Malle’ clutch to add a statement to this look. I would add some edge via black Jimmy Choo ‘Sayra’ mesh ankle tie booties, defined eyes, nude lips, old Hollywood waves, a pair of simple Chopard diamond and emerald drop earrings, and a statement diamond, emerald, and sapphire statement Chopard cuff to really make this a totally chic moment.
The 2018 Cannes Film Festival is officially open and will run through Saturday May 19, 2018. The presentation of the Trophee Chopard will take place on Monday May 14, 2018.
