Before I get into my wishes for some of the big parties of the Cannes Film Festival (and the closing ceremony obvi) I have one more gala premiere wish for this years edition. It is the other film the Riley Keough is going to be presenting at this years festival, the one in competition, Under The Silver Lake. I usually love seeing Riley Keough on the red carpet, but after some of her recent red carpet looks I am worried about what she will bring to Cannes this year. I probably shouldn’t be because there is something about Cannes that brings out the best in people so I still have decently high expectations for what Riley will bring to the red carpets at the festival. For the photocall for Under The Silver Lake I went to a rockabilly chic looks with this black and cream Jason Wu Fall 2018 RTW asymmetrical dress which features patchwork construction, fitted silhouette, and a faux wrap below the knee dress. Riley has never worn a Jason Wu look on the red carpet, but as I was searching for the perfect casual look for her to wear for the photocall of her film I was really drawn to this look. It isn’t exactly the first thing that I would normally think of for Riley, but the allure of this dress just seems perfect for her. Add a pair of gold Louis Vuitton ‘Hypnotic’ sandals, a chic loose low bun, defined eyes, and a red lip to really compliment the rockabilly glam feeling of this dress. For the premiere I (reluctantly) went back to Louis Vuitton to dress her. I had some fun with my photo editor going through the codes of recent Louis Vuitton collections and trying to design custom gowns for ladies like Riley and Lea Seydoux to wear on the Cannes red carpets. For Riley I took the gold brocade with black beaded embellishments that were on a vest from the Louis Vuitton Spring 2018 RTW collection and used them to create a strapless sweetheart neckline column gown which features a dramatic black satin train and a ribbon waistband. I gave the general idea and a similar silhouette to my photo editor and when she sent me this edit back I was in love. We don’t often seen Nicolas Ghesquière create dramatic ball gowns for Louis Vuitton so I think that this would be a nice change of pace for the brand and I definitely think that Riley would be able to sell me on the glamour of this gown. Styling it with old Hollywood waves over one shoulder, winged eyes, crimson lips, a gold Louis Vuitton ‘Petite Malle’ clutch, a pair of gold spike studded Christian Louboutin ‘Spikoo’ ankle wrap pointed toe PVC pumps, and a pair of statement vintage 18k gold Tiffany and Co. by Jean Schlumberger diamond and cultured pearl pendant drop earrings would all make this Riley’s best Louis Vuitton moment ever. Zosia Mamet has been to Venice and Tribeca to promote projects (and as a guest of Miu Miu) and this year she will make her Cannes Film Festival debut with the premiere of Under The Silver Lake. I find Zosia very intriguing. She has a style that changes but is mostly edgy and I am very interested in seeing how she handles her wardrobe decisions in Cannes. For the photocall I decided to go with a very chic moment from Miu Miu. I think that Zosia would look very chic standing on the photocall platform overlooking the French Riviera wearing this cloudy blue cotton blend overlay shift dress which features a deep V neck, a sleeveless design, sheer panels and a white floral embroidered design. It is the lightness and the simple elegance of this dress that I think would make it a really glamorous moment for a Cannes photocall. Pair it with a pair of silver Miu Miu faux pearl embellished chunky heel sandals, loose waves, simple defined eyes, and pink lips to make it head to toe perfection. For the red carpet premiere I went for weightless glamour with this white Jason Wu Fall 2018 RTW draped pleated tulle gown which features sporadic rock crystal embroidery. I had originally thought of this gown for Diane Kruger, but I do think that the quirky glamour that Zosia could bring to this gown would make it a perfect moment for her to rock as she walks up those famous steps of the Palais de Festivals. I would amp up the elegance of this look with a sleek updo, defined eyes, red lips, a black sequin Prada box clutch embellished with white and light blue crystals, a pair of silver Francesco Russo metallic platform sandals, and a pair of Chopard paraiba tourmaline and turquoise drop earrings to really make sure this is a statement making moment for Zosia’s first Cannes. Red carpet queen and Madame le President of this years jury Cate Blanchett has been giving all kinds of different looks over the course of the festival. I am still waiting for my blown away moment from her. She is using her platform as the jury president to convey several messages via her wardrobe. She has worn sustainable brand Stella McCartney who ethically sources all of her materials (its a vegan friendly fashion label,) promoted that it is chic to repeat re-wearing her 2014 Golden Globe Awards Armani Prive gown, and promoted young talent wearing Loewe so far this festival. I have a feeling that she will salute a strong female designer at some point over the festival and I think the perfect one to do that is Clare Waight Keller and her creations for Givenchy. Clare is one of the few female creative directors in the world of couture and I definitely think that Cate would sell this Givenchy Spring 2018 Couture ensemble which features a structured black blazer bodice and a white crystal embellished silk tulle skirt with a dramatic train. The simple regal glamour of this ensemble is exactly what I predict that Cate would own on a Cannes red carpet. This look has the potential to be a best dressed of the year worthy moment especially when paired with a sleek updo, defined eyes, red lips, a pair of black Givenchy ‘Shark Lock’ platform sandals, and a Chopard black pearl, rubellite, and diamond necklace.I had really high hopes for Ava DuVernay and the looks that she was going to bring to the red carpet over the course of Cannes, but so far I haven’t been blown away. I want to see her bring some major moments on the red carpet at the festival before it draws to a close. This black and gold beaded embroidered Elie Saab Fall 2017 Couture long sleeve organza ball gown would definitely give me that major moment. I would know that Ava would have the gown lined to keep with her modest style. I think that this is definitely more of a ball gown than we are used to seeing from Ava, but when she has worn them they have been MOMENTS. So I think that on the red carpet where the mantra is go big or go home that this would be a chic moment for her to bring to the red carpets at the Palais de Festivals. With a dramatic braided updo, smokey eyes, nude lips, a pair of black and gold Gianvito Rossi ‘Plexi’ pumps, and vintage gold set Harry Winston diamond wreath earrings would all make this a truly glamorous moment for Ava. Lea Seydoux has surprisingly made me love her in Louis Vuitton so far this festival, but I do still want her to branch out of the brand a couple of times over the course of the festival. I know that she is a face of the brand, but she should be able to showcase her star style wearing clothes from other brands. Just because she doesn’t wear the brand head to toe doesn’t mean that she can’t still represent the brand in every look that she wears. I would love to see Lea bring bold fringe to the Cannes Film Festival wearing this two tone red Alexander McQueen Fall 2018 RTW draped fringe gown which features a v-neck, sleeveless silhouette. I love this gown and definitely think that it would be a great moment for Lea. She brings that effortless French glamour to everything that she wears and I know that she would own this gown on the Cannes red carpet. I would love to see her twirl down the Cannes red carpet and up the steps of the Palais de Festival styling it with a red Louis Vuitton ‘Petite Malle’ clutch, a loose wavy bob, defined eyes, matching red lips, red Gucci stiletto sandals, and a pair of Chopard diamond and ruby teardrop pendant earrings. Rounding out this premiere look is the gorgeous Kristen Stewart and a look from the just presented Chanel Cruise 2019 collection. Kristen has actually already worn this collection in Cannes donning a light blue tweed pantsuit for the feature film jury photocall. I figure that at some point we will see Kristen grab one of the gowns off this runway for a premiere or party and I would love to see her bring this elegant black sequin Chanel Cruise 2019 column gown which features a plunging neckline, peplum waist, and a sequin embellished skirt. It is a simple and classic look, but I know that Kristen would edge it up with the styling. A knotted updo, smokey eye, black Christian Louboutin ‘Sotto Sopra’ strappy peep toe pumps, and a selection of Nikos Koulis jewels including asymmetrical diamond, black enamel, and emerald drop earrings, two tennis bracelets one with a statement diamond and one with a statement emerald, and an emerald, diamond, and black enamel cocktail ring on the opposite hand would all bring the edgy glam to this look.
The 2018 Cannes Film Festival is officially open and will run through Saturday May 19, 2018. The premiere of Under The Silver Lake will take place on Tuesday May 15, 2018.
