Cannes 2018: “Solo: A Star Wars Story” Photocall & Premiere Red Carpet Wish List

So since today is international Star Wars Day I thought I would celebrate with my wishes for the Cannes Film Festival gala premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story. This is one of the hottest tickets of the festival. Everyone wants to be at this premiere (which takes place on May 15, 2018) and I am sure that it will be one of the most star studded of the whole festival. So with that I say May the 4th be with you and I hope you enjoy all my wishes for this premiere. Donald Glover is one of the dudes who rocks a red carpet with looks that are statement making, yet still usually classic. For the photocall for Solo: A Star Wars Story I went for sleek and classic but bold color for Donald. I knew I wanted to use at least one Calvin Klein look for Donald even though his go to brands are Gucci and Ermenegildo Zegna. I think that Donald would be drawn to this bold red Calvin Klein double breasted suit which is paired with a high neck white shirt. It is that perfect meshing of the classic and modern man and I definitely think that this could be a really great moment for Donald. I think the look is really cool and I would just make it cooler with a pair of white Thom Browne lace-up oxfords. In a wardrobe swap for the premiere of the film I went for more of a 70’s vibe with a Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2018 Menswear powder blue velvet and navy silk tuxedo. This is a really dramatic look for Donald and while most men go for more of a classic look on the Cannes Film Festival, but if anyone is going to bring something different to the red carpet that I think Donald would own this look on the festivals red carpets. Since the tuxedo itself is such a statement I picked more of a simple pair of shoes. I think a pair of black patent leather Louis Leeman slippers adorned with elegant soutache trimming and metal accessories would perfectly compliment this ensemble. It isn’t space themed just top notch menswear. Emilia Clarke will make her Cannes Film Festival debut this year with the gala screening of Solo: A Star Wars Story. She is one that I usually love to see on the red carpet, and I am really excited to see what she will bring to the red carpets at the festival. She debuted blonde locks earlier this year and I’m currently wondering if she will still have them when she steps out in Cannes. I picked my wishes for Emilia based on the assumption that she will. For the photocall I pulled a look off the virtual racks of FarFetch picking this black Alexander McQueen red and pink lipstick print long sleeve shirt dress. It is a chic dress that I definitely think that Emilia would bring to the photocall platform with ease. It isn’t couture or off the runway but a chic McQueen moment is always a chic moment and I definitely think that it is perfect for Emilia in Cannes especially when paired with statement red lace Gianvito Rossi sandals, a loose updo, defined eyes, and nude lips. For the premiere I went down a much more visual moment than most stars promoting films at the festival do on the Cannes red carpet. I think that this almost black and white Christian Dior Spring 2018 Couture psychedelic print gown which features a strapless neckline, a full a-line skirt, and a sweeping train is a real visual moment and it is definitely a risk, but I definitely think that with the right styling would be one of my favorite moments of the whole festival. I really went for it with the styling of this gown adding a dramatic black Alexander McQueen ostrich feathered clutch, black Christian Louboutin ‘Circonvolu Strass’ sandals, a bouffant style updo, defined winged eyes, red lips, and a statement black diamond De Grisogono collar necklace. I love me a Thandie Newton moment on the red carpet and I am excited to see what she will bring for her very first Cannes Film Festival. Glamour, color, and statements. That is what I am expecting from Thandie when she steps out at the Cannes Film Festival. I went for more of a bohemian look for the Solo: A Star Wars Story premiere with this Altuzarra Fall 2018 RTW ensemble which consists of a white poet style top which features metallic accents, a plunging neckline, a drawstring waist, and a ruffled neckline and a pair of black suede cropped pants which features a flared hem. This isn’t a bold look, but the ease of this look is very feminine and glamour. I think that with a high ponytail, defined eyes, nude lips, and a pair of lilac, cream, and black Sergio Rossi striped pointed toe pumps would all really make this a chic photocall moment. For the premiere I surprisingly went short. When it comes to stars promoting films in Cannes I don’t then to pick gowns that don’t bring dramatics looks via full skirts or long trains to really command the red carpet. I do believe that Thandie would be able to take this black polka dotted tulle Erdem Fall 2018 RTW tea length gown which features a sheer construction over a silver sequin cocktail dress, long sleeves with ruffled cuts, keyhole cutout, and a ruffled skirt and make it a really dramatic moment on the Cannes red carpet. This is a dramatic look without being a ball gown or having a long train and with the right attitude and styling it could compete with those gowns. A pair of simple black strappy Sergio Rossi PVC detail sandals, a sleek center parted low bun hairstyle, dark red lips, smokey eyes, and a pair of Harry Winston diamond chandelier earrings all would really ensure that this is a really great look for Thandie. I don’t usually take the film into account when picking looks for the Jury because often my wishes for jury members don’t always attend all the premieres. My jury wishes tend to be more general, but since the Solo: A Star Wars Story premiere is going to be one of the big gets for tickets I could definitely see jury president Cate Blanchett bringing the jury to this screening as a fun night over the course of deliberations over the festival. I was already loving the idea of seeing Cate wearing this silver Antonio Berardi Fall 2018 RTW alligator skin inspired long sleeve gown which features lace inserts on the v-neckline and a column silhouette and when a Star Wars franchise film was announced as a gala screening at this years festival I knew that this would be the perfect red carpet for Cate to bring this gown to life. It is the perfect meshing of sci-fi and glamour for the queen of the red carpets and I know she would absolutely sell this look to me. Add a romantic updo, smokey eyes, nude lips, a pair of black patent Gianvito Rossi peep toe strappy sandals, and a pair of antique 1920’s Fred Leighton diamond and onyx drop earrings to really mesh the old Hollywood glam into this very space age glam gown. This is hands down the most avant garde design I’ve picked for director and jury member Ava DuVernay to bring to the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. I went back and forth on weather this blood orange Ashi Studio Spring 2018 Couture gown which features a sleek long sleeve bodice and a pleated ruffle skirt was right for Ava. She does tend to stick to muted tones for big red carpet events, and usually a much simpler silhouette, but I do believe in the Cannes mantra of ‘go big or go home.’ And go big with this gown I did. I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I definitely think that with the right attitude and styling that Ava would definitely sell this look to me on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. The perfect styling for this look would be rather simple with a high bun of braids, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of gold Prada metallic sandals, and a pair of statement Irene Neuwirth fire opal and diamond earrings. Kristen Stewart sat front row at the Chanel Cruise 2019 show last night in Paris and definitely got an option or two to bring right off the runway to the Cannes Film Festival, but much like other brand ambassadors who I’m making wishes for to wear for the festival this year I’m not doing wall to wall Chanel for Kristen. When she steps out of Chanel and isn’t constantly giving me fatigue wearing look after look from the same two or three collections is when I tend to find my favorite moments from Kristen and I am really looking forward to seeing what she will being to the Cannes red carpets this year. I went down the list of designers that Kristen has worn in the past and for the Star Wars red carpet I went to Stella McCartney (who most notably dressed Kristen for the 2013 Met Gala. This simple and sleek black Stella McCartney long sleeved gown which features a column silhouette, cutout open back, and a train is the epitome of modern glamour and I definitely think that this sleeker take on Kristen’s style. I tend to think that when Kristen wears a very simple and sleek gown that is when she has had some of her best red carpet moments, and I definitely think that even though this is a black gown that Kristen would be able to really own this gown on the Cannes red carpet. Style it with a sleek hairstyle, defined smokey eyes, red lips, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Very Lace’ peep toe pumps, and a statement Messika Fine Jewelry ‘Calypso’ diamond collar necklace to really ensure that this look is the definition of modern glam from head to toe. On the flip side of Kristen I decided to go to the brand that Lea Seydoux has a contract with for my wish for her to wear on the red carpet at the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story. I don’t want to see Lea, or any brand ambassador, give wall to wall moments in the brand that she represents. I do understand that she is contractually obligated to wear the brand, but I also know she has the power to give a little variation. There have been 0 Cannes worthy gowns to come down a Louis Vuitton runway in a while, so I had to go the custom route (like I did for Lea to wear for the Opening Ceremony.) I did see a sequined and silk halter cocktail dress close the Louis Vuitton Fall 2018 RTW show and thought that taking the shape of that neckline, swapping the half pleated/half straight skirt for a perfectly tailored column skirt, and taking the sequins from the bodice and making them all over the gown would be a really beautiful moment on the red carpet. I personally don’t photoshop the custom looks that I post. I have a friend who I send an idea to and she does the edit for me. When I got the edit of this gown sent back to me it was better than I imagined. It really could be one of my favorite Louis Vuitton moments ever, and I do believe that Lea could sell the glamour of this look to life on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. Pair it with a black Louis Vuitton ‘Petite Malle’ clutch with gold embellishments, old Hollywood waves, smokey eyes, red lips, black Rene Caovilla crystal embellished strappy sandals, and a pair of Chopard yellow diamond chandelier earrings to really ensure that this look is head to to perfection.

The 2018 Cannes Film Festival opens Tuesday May 8, 2018 and will run through Saturday May 19, 2018.
