Cannes 2018: Cate Blanchett Party Style Red Carpet Wish List

As the first female jury president of the Cannes Film Festival official selection since I have started covering the festival I wonder how active Cate will be on the red carpets of the festival. We are sure to see her three times for sure: the jury photocall, the opening ceremony, and the closing ceremony. There are so many great parties that take place over the course of the festival and I am really hoping that Cate ventures out to a few of them in between screenings and jury deliberations. As I started picking looks for Cate I had 40 designers and over 60 looks for her to wear over the 12 days of this years festival. I want to see Cate deliver a really major set of looks. She is also gearing up for the Oceans 8 promo tour, so it is highly likely that she will be one of the competitors for this years Red Carpet Diva of the Year, and Cannes is definitely the place that journey is going to begin. I had to go for all of Cate’s favorite brands and she has always been most loyal to Armani Prive. I was praying for a really major Cate worthy collection come out of the brands Spring 2018 Couture collection, but sadly there just wasn’t anything that really screamed Cate to me, but don’t worry because I went back into the Armani archives to pick a plethora of great moments for her to rock this year. The first is this black strapless Armani Prive Spring 2009 Couture midi gown which features a structured sequin construction, flared details just below the hip and on the them, and an intricate panel of silver beading down the center mast of the bodice. This is really a gown that only Cate could sell to me and I definitely think that a Cannes party red carpet is the perfect place for it to be dusted off and brought out of the archives and onto a red carpet especially when paired with a black clutch, simple black sandals, smokey eyes, diamond drop earrings, a sleek updo, and nude lips.Antonio Berardi is another brand that Cate often frequents for red carpet looks. The British designer goes through a lot of different style and I will find whatever Cate snatches from the brand for the red carpet interesting, but I would really love to see her give us 60’s Palm Springs realness wearing this watermelon pink Antonio Berardi Spring 2018 RTW caftan inspired midi gown which features intricate beading on the neckline and sleeves, flowing chiffon sleeves, and a belted waist a go at one of the Cannes parties this year. You really shouldn’t compete with a gown like this with a lot of intricate styling so I would just have Cate pair this gown with a nude embellished clutch, a pair of simple gold sandals, a romantic updo, simple eyes, and a matching watermelon lip.

Going back into a RTW collection that is in stores is probably not going to happen, but I thought that I would put the idea out there anyway. Not a single star has been able to sell the the gold patchwork peasant dresses from the Chloé Spring 2018 RTW collection, but I think that if anyone could that it would be Cate. I would love to see her take on one of the more relaxed parties (maybe the annual Vanity Fair dinner) wearing this long sleeve design which features ruffles on the bodice, an ankle length hem, wide bell sleeves. Cate knows how to elevate a look to be something much more than it already is, and I think that is exactly what would happen here. A bohemian inspired romantic updo, smokey eyes, antique rose pink lips, a gold Chloé ‘Nile’ small bracelet bag, and simple gold sandals would enhance the bohemian glam of this look.

Cate has only worn Elie Saab on one occasion, and it sadly didn’t live up to the potential of either Cate or Elie. I know that with the right look and the right red carpet that Cate and Elie has the potential to really make some magic happen. I think that would be the case if Cate stepped out for one of the Cannes parties this year wearing this black Elie Saab Fall 2016 Couture 40’s inspired suit which features a strong shoulder jacket with intricate gold embroidery and wide legs. I think that Cate is the perfect person to pull this look out of the archive. She would add her signature regal elegance and totally sell this look to me on the red carpet with a black and gold Louis Vuitton ‘Petite Malle’ clutch, a pair of black pumps, a 40’s inspired hairstyle, winged eyes, and a bold red lip.

I was originally going to show this white, blue, red, and gold Mary Katrantzou Fall 2018 RTW dress which features a high neckline, a cold shoulder with draped detail, intricate beading, and a midi length hem as a gown for Cate to wear at one of the premieres. It was one of those moments that when I saw it come down the runway I thought that it would be even more beautiful modified into a major moment, and it was beautiful, but I ultimately decided that the runway version as is would be a really chic party moment and I think that Cate would definitely sell it to me.

Rounding out the list is another look that as soon as I saw and immediately said that needs to be seen on Cate in Cannes. She often sells British brand Peter Pilotto to me. The brand is known for its rich use of color and pattern and that is certainly not lacking in this Peter Pilotto Fall 2018 RTW suit which features a red and pink satin patchwork blazer and satin contrast wide leg trousers. We usually see Cate stick to a softer pallate of colors, but I definitely think that in Cannes that this would be a perfect ensemble for her to rock for one of the parties. I think that with a nude satin Roger Vivier clutch with a crystal buckle, champagne satin peep toe pumps, wavy locks, a defined light smokey eye, and pink lips would really make this a bold statement look, with a relaxed nature about it.

The 2018 Cannes Film Festival opens Tuesday May 8, 2018 and will run through Saturday May 19, 2018.
