When it comes to the Cannes Film Festival not all the looks that we see are on the photocall balcony and the red carpet at the Palais de Festivals. There are also a bounty of street style looks. From arriving and departing at the Nice Airport to the looks we see on the sidewalks as stars go from event to event. The glamour of the looks we see from stars as street style usually still embodies the go big or go home mentality that the festival embodies all the way around. I am praying that Cate Blanchett will shut down the sidewalks in addition to the red carpets. She isn’t exactly known for her street style, but I have a feeling that the streets of Cannes are going to do major things for her. She is the president of this years feature film jury and I really do have the high expectations for her this year. The first casual style look that I thought of when I started to think of what I wanted to see Cate wearing this year was this Brandon Maxwell Spring 2018 RTW ensemble which consists of an ivory blazer which features a thin shawl lapel, slight wrap closure, belted waist, and princess seams for a tailored fit and a pair of pleated mid-wash jeans which feature a high rise, inseam pockets, and exaggerated wide leg. I don’t really think of denim often when I think of Cannes, but I do think that if anyone could sell this look to me it would be Cate. I would style it with a white Burberry ‘The Small Banner’ bag with brogue detail, a pair of white No. 21 abstract bow stiletto pumps, and a pair of navy and gold Jimmy Choo ‘Nile’ cat eye frame sunglasses. It would make for a perfect look to be captured heading from meeting to screening around the festival. I went through all the designers we usually see Cate wearing, and some that I think she should give a shot. Cate loved wearing Dior when Raf Simons was the creative director, and surprising what she hasn’t yet worn a look of his from Calvin Klein. I wouldn’t necessarily think that street style would be the first time we see Cate wearing Calvin Klein by Raf Simons, but I think that she would totally embody the glamour of the riviera wearing this Calvin Klein ensemble which features a sleeveless lime and cream color-block shantung top and a white fitted cotton midi skirt with a flounce hem. Bright and breezy. That’s what this look is and would be perfectly compliment with a white Orciani large top handle tote and white Calvin Klein western style cutout PVC pumps.
Cate has never worn Rosie Assoulin before, but I think that the high end and dramatic take on a more laid back take on glamour would fit right in with what we are used to seeing from her. I would love to see her captured walking on the croisette wearing this blue/red marble print Rosie Assoulin Fall 2018 RTW ensemble which features a belted blazer and pleated flute skirt. This look reminds me of a 40’s suit in a modern take on tropical print and I totally think that Cate would own this look on the sidewalk runway. Pair it with black Chloe ‘Pixie’ round bag, red Prada low block heel sandals, and Fendi rainbow sunglasses to really ensure that this look is glamour defined.
I wanted to bring a little bit of Cate’s homeland to the festival with her this year and one of the easiest ways for me to do that was through fashion. So I went on the hunt for really beautiful fashion from Australian designers. I went back to a brand that Cate hasn’t worn since 2009, Romance Was Born. Back then she wore a crocheted one shoulder blanket dress, it was ugly. This black dress which features cap sleeves, pearl details, and a polka dotted ruffled skirt is really beautiful and I totally think that Cate would just saunter down the sidewalks wearing this creation. A black Fendi ‘Kan I’ bag which features scalloped details, a chain and leather strap, a fold over top with clasp closure, accordion details at sides and a top handle and a pair of black Nicholas Kirkwood ‘Zaha’ sandals with a lucite heel and gold details would be the perfect accessories to compliment this dress.
Last but not least I think that Cate would definitely rock some pants wearing this ocean blue Oscar de la Renta Spring 2018 RTW suit which features a double breasted jacket, culotte pants, and a white paint splatter print. Cate loves an oversized suit and that is exactly what she would deliver wearing this look on the sidewalks of Cannes. I think that styling this look with a matching blue Givenchy ‘Antigona’ medium tote, white Oscar de la Renta ‘Freya’ sandals, and Tom Ford ‘Rania’ sunglasses all would put the perfect finishing touches on this ensemble.
The 2018 Cannes Film Festival opens Tuesday May 8, 2018 and will run through Saturday May 19, 2018.
