2018 Met Gala Red Carpet Wish List Part 7

I have said that I am fearful of what stars will wear on the 2018 Met Gala red carpet with the theme being “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” That could lead to some majorly offensive cultural appropriation, but I am also really excited. We tend to see stars stick to the theme, but with the potential for controversy I wonder how many will be on theme this year. Anna Wintour has said that the dress code is “Sunday Best,” so we could very well just see glamorous gowns that have absolutely nothing to do with religion. I do think that there are some that will take the religious theme and run with it, and for them I hope they do it in a very chic, loosely associative way.My wish for Andrea Riseborough might be in my seventh set of wishes, but she was one of the first looks that I actually picked. I saw this cream Schiaparelli Spring 2018 Couture hooded gown which features intricate floral beading come down the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week runway back in January and Andrea and the Met Gala immediately sprang into my mind. Andrea has this sense of style that I feel like would really be able to make this gown a chic moment. It loosely reminded me of Papal robes and I think that if there will be any fashion iterations of that on the red carpet that this is just the perfect look for that. While the 2012 “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” themed Met Gala was the reason that the house of Schiaparelli was un-shuttered we haven’t seen the brand on a Met Gala red carpet since it was re-opened. This would be a perfect time and Andrea would be the perfect person to really make this look come to life. Last years Met Gala was Andrea’s debut at the famed event, and despite the fact that she was the guest of Tom Ford (whose movie she had just stared in) her look was easily forgettable. This Schiaparelli gown paired with a sleek hairstyle, defined eyes, bright pink lips, and a pair of white satin Jimmy Choo ‘Lancer’ strappy pumps would definitely allow her to hang with the brightest of the nights style stars.Dua Lipa has kinda taken the fashion world by storm. I can’t say I really knew who she was before the 2018 Brit Awards (where she wore Giambattista Valli Couture on the red carpet, performed in Versace Tribute, accepted her award in custom Armani Prive, and attended the after party in Stella McCartney) but she has made impacts on red carpets wearing brands like Alessandra Rich, Ulyana Sergeenko, Alexander Wang, and Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini. Since Anna Wintour likes to invite budding music stars to the Met Gala (she had invited Lorde before ‘Royals’ made a huge impact) I would be surprised if she doesn’t invite Dua Lipa. While I think that it is most likely that if Dua Lipa does rock the red carpet that she will be dressed by Giambattista Valli. I decided however to pick the runway look that immediately screamed Dua Lipa to me on the red carpet and that was this black and white Brandon Maxwell Fall 2018 RTW ensemble which consists of a black bouclé flared sleeve hoodie and a white a-line ball skier which features a contrast waistband and allover crystal Swarovski embroidery. I have a good feeling that this look will be on the Met Gala red carpet and I definitely think that Dua would shut this red carpet down wearing this look. It gives me subtle high fashion take on a nun’s habit, so I think that just adds another plus for this look. A sleek center parted low bun, defined eyes, red lips, and a pair of black Giuseppe Zanotti strappy crystal embellished sandals would all add the perfect finishing touches to this ensemble. Since making her major red carpet debut at the 2017 Venice Film Festival opening ceremony premiere of Downsizing we have seen Hong Chau rocking Elie Saab, custom Stella McCartney, Christian Dior, and Rodarte on the red carpets. With her being embraced by fashion brands (she was even one of the Rodarte muses that modeled in the Fall 2018 lookbook) I feel like we will most likely see her on the Met Gala red carpet early next month. I do believe that if Hong is invited that she will wear one of two brands: Dior or Rodarte. I would probably place by bet on her wearing a custom Rodarte gown, but I couldn’t pick a look from the Rodarte collections as is or modified that I loved for Hong. So I decided to pick a look thats totally off theme but something I think Hong would look very chic wearing. This yellow, green, blue, and red floral embroidered Christian Dior Fall 2018 RTW column gown which features a floor length silhouette, cap sleeves, and a thick ‘D’ buckle black belt is really chic and I definitely think that Hong would own this dress on the red carpet. Do I think that it would make for one of the biggest stand out looks of the night? No, but as a budding fashionista I don’t have real high expectations for her. I would be quite happy if she delivered this as a really chic moment with a romantic updo, defined eyes, dark red lips, a black Rafe interwoven tassel detail clutch, and a pair of black Aquazzura x Farfetch ‘Very Holli’ strappy sandals. On the morning of the Oscars this year it was announced that Margot Robbie is a new face of Chanel, and that night she did the brand good wearing a custom white gown for the red carpet (even if it was inspired by a dress Penelope Cruz wore 3 years ago.) There is a new Chanel collection which will debut days before the Met Gala (which for the first time in a while where Chanel ambassadors can both sit front row at the Cruise show and attend the Met Gala) so Margot might make her third Met Gala appearance (she’s worn custom Calvin Klein and Miu Miu in the past) wearing a hot off the runway design. I decided to modify a cocktail dress from the Chanel Spring 2018 Couture collection into a chic peplum column gown. I think that this baby pink and mint beaded halter gown would be something Margot would love easy. I originally had modified a ballgown for Margot, but the more I thought about it the more I started to think that Margot isn’t a princess gown kinda person. The shape of this gown is very much in Margot’s wheelhouse and I think it would definitely be a beautiful moment for Margot on the Met Gala red carpet. I would style the look with a vintage gold Chanel pearl tassel detail clutch, romantic updo, soft smokey eyes, baby pink lips, metallic gold Gianvito Rossi ‘Palais’ sandals with a plexiglass squared heel, and a pair of Mikimoto diamond and pink conch pearl drop earrings to really ensure that Margot has another beautiful moment in Chanel for the 2018 Met Gala red carpet. Solange Knowles is a Met Gala fashionista. She always delivers really statement moments on the red carpet. In recent years she has worn Thom Browne, David LaPort, Giles, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Kenzo, Rachel Roy, and Dries Van Noten. Everything from pants to cocktail dresses, tribal prints, bold color, and even a puffer coat with ice skate inspired wedges. She is always one that knows how to make a bold statement on the red carpet and I am praying that she will make another statement making moment on the red carpet. Solange was another of the easy early Met Gala picks because when I saw this nude and dusty blue Iris Van Herpen Spring 2018 Couture avant garde cocktail dress come down the runway Solange was the only person I could picture wearing it. If anyone could sell this couture angel moment to me on a red carpet it would be Solange. She just oozes cool girl elegance when she wears even the most complicated of designs. This dress is such a statement all on it’s own that I would just add a pair of light gold and iridescent glitter Giuseppe Zanotti ‘Sophie’ sandals, her short blonde afro, thick lashes, a nude lip, strong brows, and a pair of Anita Ko ‘Ava’ rose gold set diamond fan studs to really ensure that this is a major statement moment.

The 2018 Met Gala will take place on the first Monday in May. May 7, 2018.
