We have officially made it to my wishes for one of the most magical nights of the year, the 2018 Met Gala. It is on this red carpet that we see some of the most dramatic and iconic looks ever worn. I think back to Zendaya in Dolce & Gabbana in 2017, Rihanna in Guo Pei in 2015, Zoe Saldana in Dolce & Gabbana in 2016, Gisele Bundchen in Versace in 2008, Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe in 2012, Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen in 2006, Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren in 2017, and Beyonce in Givenchy Couture in 2012 and remember my reaction the first time I saw these gowns on the red carpet. I remember the aw at the creativity and the drama. That is what the Met Gala is all about. Bringing the drama. Over the last ten years as the Met Gala has continued to grow in spectacle the hostess with the most-est Anna Wintour has pretty much stayed loyal to one brand, Chanel. She has worn the brand in 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, and 2008 only opting to wear a Prada gown in 2012 when the gala honored Prada and Schiaparelli. She rarely dresses on theme, which this year is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” so I went back to her go to couturier, but I played with a runway look. I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of any of the hot off the runway couture gowns for Anna, but I saw a blush pink cocktail dress which featured and a-line skirt, embellished tweed panels, and a cropped sleeve bolero jacket on the Chanel Spring 2018 Couture runway and thought that it would make the perfect gown for Anna to wear for this years gala. I just modified the gown to hit the floor. Anna isn’t usually one for big fussy skirts or long dramatic trains. I personally think that this gown is a typical Anna Wintour ensemble that we could see her rock on any red carpet. Since she purchases the gowns she wears for the Met Gala they tend to get re-worn, and I could definitely picture her putting this gown on repeat for any other formal event that she could attend. Her styling is usually the same for every outfit: her signature bob, sunglasses, necklaces, and Manolo Blahnik ‘AW’ sandals. I would love to see Anna swap her typical namesake Manolo’s for a pair of a gold Manolo Blahnik ‘Iacopo’ metallic fabric mule sandals to make this a really chic moment for the Met Gala red carpet. Amal Clooney is one of the co-hosts of this years Met Gala along with Anna Wintour, Rihanna, and Donatella Versace. I have high expectations for her after she stunned in 2015 wearing a custom red Maison Margiela by John Galliano and the fact that she is one of my favorite stars and is extremely likely to wear Atelier Versace on the red carpet. Donatella opted not to release a lookbook for her Spring 2018 Atelier Versace collection aside from what we have seen on Instagram. There are definitely lots of options from that collection that I feel like we are likely to see on the Met Gala red carpet early next month. I actually saw this gold pleated ruffle Atelier Versace gown on Instagram and it immediately signaled the best option for Amal to rock on this red carpet. I think that as a human rights lawyer that the religious iconography will be minimal to zero. I think that this gold gown paired with old Hollywood waves, defined eyes, red lips, gold Versace metallic open-toe sandals, a gold Judith Leiber ‘N/S’ rectangle minaudiere, and a pair of vintage Harry Winston gold and diamond tassel earrings would be the absolutely major moment I am expecting from Amal on the Met Gala red carpet. Rihanna will most likely take the Met Gala red carpet wearing a custom Atelier Versace gown. There haven’t been any gowns from Atelier Versace collections that I think fit both Rihanna’s style and the theme of this years event. No celebrity has ever worn a Stephane Rolland gown on the red carpet at the Met Gala and I feel like Rihanna would make for the perfect person to rock the brand on the famed red carpeted steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I think that this white long sleeve Stephane Rolland Fall 2017 Couture column gown which features a mock neck, sculpted black flame on one shoulder, a sexy center split, and a dramatic train would be a really chic moment for Rihanna to rock on this red carpet. I don’t think that every look on the Met Gala red carpet has to be literal iterations of crosses, baroque churches, angels, and looks inspired by the dress of Catholic priests and nuns. The gown is such a statement on its own that I would keep the styling really simple. Add a sleek low bun, smokey eyes, nude lips, a pair of strappy Versace sandal boots (to add some edge,) and statement Lydia Courteille fire opal, yellow and orange sapphire, and diamond flame inspired earrings to make a really gorgeous moment for the Met Gala red carpet. The last four years Anna Wintour’s daughter Bee Shaffer has attended the Met Gala rocking a dramatic Alexander McQueen gown. Despite the fact that she isn’t one of the biggest names on the red carpet she is usually one of my favorites of the night. I think that Bee would definitely take this gorgeous pink Alexander McQueen Fall 2018 RTW ruffled silk chiffon gown which features poufy long sleeves, sheer panels, and lots of feathered details. The Met Gala red carpet is one of the ones that really has to be perfect from all sides since photographers are stationed on both sides of those famed Met Gala steps and this gown is beautiful both coming and going. I think that with a sleek vintage inspired updo, smokey eyes, matching pink lips, a vintage art deco Fred Leighton diamond necklace, and a pair of light pink Alexander McQueen embellished bow sandals all would ensure that this is yet another absolutely beautiful moment for Bee to deliver on this years Met Gala red carpet. Miley Cyrus has attended two Met Gala’s in the past, both during her notorious rebellious phase wearing custom Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs. Since the beginning of this year we have seen a more glamorous side of Miley’s style wearing vintage Jean Paul Gaultier, Zac Posen, Moschino, and Prabal Gurung. I decided to go for very chic, dramatic glamour for Miley to wear on the red carpet at this years gala, if she so is invited and chooses to attend. I think that Miley would definitely own her new glamorous take on edgy styles wearing this black Vera Wang Fall 2018 RTW gown which features a tuxedo jacket inspired peplum waist vest bodice and a dramatic tulle ball skirt. The gown isn’t something I would have picked for Miley a year or two ago, but this gown is a really beautiful moment for her to showcase this new side of her style. I would style it with a sleek updo, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Fictore’ platform PVC paneled peep toe pumps, and a statement Van Cleef & Arpels diamond and emerald art deco inspired necklace to ensure that this look is absolutely beautiful from head to toe.
The 2018 Met Gala will take place on the first Monday in May. May 7, 2018.
