John Galliano took the reigns of Maison Margiela’s women’s collections in January of 2015, and immediately made the brand fresh and coveted again. He has delivered amazing runway shows, both couture and ready-to-wear, and custom red carpet gowns. Now, three years later, John Galliano has taken his place as the creative director of the brands menswear as well. It was a distinct change from past Margiela menswear. Instead of pretty standard menswear John’s debut menswear collection was like watching his debut couture collection come down the runway, but with more color. The collection really seemed to intersect menswear and womenswear. Androgyny is in fashion and John fully embraced it. Amazing coats were a big focus of this collection, as have been most of the season since it is for fall. Overall the coats are real statement pieces. Very extra. The red oversized wool trench (above far left) could be a really great street style moment with black skinny jeans and a black cable knit sweater, so that could very easily be incorporated into someones everyday wardrobe. The white deconstructed trench that closed the show (above center) is less likely to be worn, unless Rihanna decides to break into menswear again. That was how I felt looking at a lot of this collection. There were great pieces that I can see people with a real eye for style being drawn to wanting to incorporate into their wardrobes followed by pieces that are just truly works of art that would take a much more distinct customer to be a hit.Often we don’t see Margiela menswear on the red carpet, but will the Galliano effect translate from the runway to the red carpet too? I would bet that it just might. Prior to Galliano it was EXTREMELY rare that we saw a Margiela moment on the red carpet. Since then some of the chicest women in the world have become fans of the brand. His designs have been loved by Anna Wintour, Katy Perry, Kirsten Dunst, Cate Blanchett, Amal Clooney, Cara Delevinge, and more. I have all kinds of names in mind to bring this collection to life on the red carpet (both men and women.) Future, Li Yuchun, Fan Bingbing, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Tommy Dorfman, Will Smith, Usher, Chris Brown, Jared Leto, Diddy, Ciara, Drake, and Rita Ora are all stars who I think have the potential to take some of the pieces or full looks from this collection and turn them into some major moments on the red carpet. I have mentioned the piece (or pieces) that I wish would magically appear in my wardrobe and yet again that piece is a coat. The oversized cream heavy knit toggle button coat (above right) is just that piece. I would want to see it fit me a little less oversized pairing it with a camel cashmere sweater, light wash jeans, and a pair of gold chelsea boots to have a look that would definitely define my #WhenInDoubtBeExtra mantra of dressing.
