2018 Directors Guild of America Awards Red Carpet Wish List

Over all of my years of covering the red carpets of awards season I have learned that the guild awards are more likely to predict Oscar winners than we see at the Golden Globe, Hollywood Film, or Critics Choice Awards. We don’t know who is nominated for an Oscar yet (the nominations will be announced Tuesday Jan. 23) so it will be interesting to see who will make the final cut. Greta Gerwig is the only female nominee in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film and one of the handful of women nominated for a Directors Guild Award at all. It came as a disgrace to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to give Lady Bird the title of Best Motion Picture – Drama and the films star Saoirse Ronan the title of Best Actress in a Motion Picture -Drama and not to have nominated Greta as a director at all. I am hopeful that the voting body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will honor Greta in the directing category. On a much lighter and more frivolous note for the DGA Awards red carpet I went to a really mod fun moment for Greta with this black and ivory polka dotted long sleeve ankle length Valentino Pre-Fall 2018 gown which features a Peter Pan collar and a column silhouette. This very modernist take on 60’s style is something I think that Greta could really be one of the boldest statements on this red carpet. Add a black and white paint splatter Tyler Ellis ‘Anjuli’ clutch, sleek hairstyle, kohl rimmed eyes, a red lip, black patent Gianvito Rossi ‘Manhattan’ sandals, and a pair of vintage Tiffany & Co. 18k gold and ruby flower earrings to really make this look a head to toe statement. Allison Williams has been serving looks on the red carpet while she has made the awards show rounds supporting her film Get Out, and I am hoping that she will be on the DGA Awards red carpet to support the films director Jordan Peele who is nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film and Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film. Usually stars go for much simpler styles for the Directors Guild Awards since it they aren’t the focus of the evening, but there to support their directors. I decided to go big, but go short with this black and eggplant Pamella Roland Pre-Fall 2018 tea length tulle gown which features a plunging neckline, sequin embroidery on the bodice, a peplum waist, and a full skirt. This gown is dramatic and moody, but also romantic and feminine and I think that Allison would definitely carry this look off with great aplomb. A sleek bun, simple defined eye, rose pink lips, a pair of black Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudistsong’ sandals, and simple Cartier onyx and diamond art deco drop earrings all would ensure that the gown is the focus of this gorgeous dramatic moment. I always love a Jessica Chastain sighting on the red carpet and I would love to see her step out for the Directors Guild of America Awards to support her Molly’s Game director Aaron Sorkin who is nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film. Some of my highlights of her awards season rounds so far have been Givenchy at the Creative Impact Awards, Armani Prive at the Golden Globe Awards, and Vionnet at the Critics Choice Awards. For the DGA Awards I went to this beautiful peachy pink Rochas Spring 2018 RTW gown which features a ruffle detail on neckline and collar, a deep-v neckline, and a pleated skirt. This is just a beautiful and romantic gown and I think that it would be a really chic moment for Jessica to wear on the red carpet. Personally I think that she should take a pair of scissors to the ruffle that spans the collar bone, but I also think that with the right hair that it could work. Either way I would love to see Jessica pair this gown with a loose romantic updo, simple defined eyes, rose pink lips, black Jimmy Choo ‘Lang’ strappy sandals, and a selection of Piaget jewelry including a pair of rose gold and diamond floral stud earrings and a pink opal and diamond flower ring to finish this look perfectly.I don’t want this while list to be dominated by the stars of the films whose directors are nominated so I thought that adding Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown would be a fun moment. Millie loves to have fun with fashion and I think that she would deliver a really chic high fashion moment on the DGA Awards red carpet if she steps out to support the Duffer brothers who are nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series. Everyone knows that Millie has been a muse for Raf Simons at Calvin Klein and while she has worn the brand for all of the big red carpets I think we might see her add some variation to her designer label dossier on a red carpet like this. I think that this black and white Chanel Spring 2018 RTW ensemble which features a dramatic ruffled blouse with a Peter Pan collar and a black silk a-line mini skirt would be a really great moment to break Millie into the world of French high fashion. I think that this look screams youthful fashion star, and I think that Millie has mastered giving face and could definitely wear this look and not let it wear her. I think that a pair of black Calvin Klein Collection ‘Camelle’ asymmetrical crystal embellished sandals, a tight high bun, a defined eye, nude lips, and a pair of chic Chanel Fine Jewelry ‘Plume’ diamond earrings all would ensure that Millie continues to show that she is a true fashion girl. She is giving me major Keirnan Shipka early years vibes. Nicole Kidman has been out supporting Big Little Lies everywhere so I would imagine that the Directors Guild Awards would just be another stop on the road for her. I have been really impressed with all of the moments that Nicole has had and I am thoroughly back in love with her after a period where I had a love/hate relationship. I want to see her give a strikingly simple moment on this red carpet and I think that this black Emilia Wickstead Pre-Fall 2018 midi dress which features structured sleeves, a v-neckline, and simple beaded embroidery would do just that. Sometimes some of Nicole’s best looks come from beautifully structured moments and I think that this would definitely be one of those. Sleek hair like the model in the lookbook, a smokey eye, light pink lip, black Christian Louboutin ‘Nosy’ PVC t-strap pumps, and a pair of statement pink and purple Van Cleef & Arpels floral and fringe earrings all would ensure this look is nothing but perfection from head to toe. Rounding out my wishes for the Directors Guild Awards is Reese Witherspoon who seems to have been responsible for bringing director Jean-Marc Vallée onto Big Little Lies. Reese wears black, white, and red often on the red carpet, but for this red carpet I wanted to bring a major color statement in the chicest way possible for Reese. That is where this tangello orange Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2018 twist front dress features an off the shoulder neckline, gathered detail at bodice, and pleat detail on skirt came into play. This dress is incredibly classic and chic, but is a real statement because of the color. I think that if Reese paired this dress with a chic updo, simple defined eyes, a light pink lip, light gold glitter Jimmy Choo ‘Annie’ sandals, and statement citrine, diamond, and emerald Bulgari chandelier earrings that she would have one of her best red carpet moments in a really long time
