2018 AFI Awards Red Carpet Wish List Part 1

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and having fun with friends and family. Usually I take the days leading up to Christmas off to enjoy myself, but awards season is starting earlier than ever and is more packed than you could ever imagine. I can’t even fit wish lists for all of the events on my schedule. I promise though that there will be no drought of glamour on If I Was A Stylist. To kick off my wishes for Awards Season 2018 we have my wishes for the 2018 AFI Awards, which will be celebrated at a luncheon on Friday January 5, 2018. This red carpet is definitely one of the most casual events of award season and with it’s place right before the Golden Globe Awards, it is nice to see stars let their hair down a little and have a little fun with casual fashion. The AFI Awards are handed out in Top 10 lists for film and television and we tend to see the big stars who are in these productions step out to support their titles. Elisabeth Moss is the favorite to take home the Best Actress in a TV Drama trophy at the Golden Globe Awards her her leading role in The Handmaid’s Tale which is being honored as on the the 10 best television programs of 2017. Lizzy has a quirky sense of style and I have to say that she can be very hit or miss for me. She tends to opt for a lot of looks that was her out, so I wanted to infuse some great color into her wardrobe. I think that this evergreen J.W. Anderson Spring 2018 RTW sleeveless, knit, a-line, knee length dress which features a watteau neckline would flatter Elisabeth’s curves beautifully and infuse a nice color into her standard of black, white, and nude. I personally don’t think that J.W. Anderson gets enough love on the red carpet, so I think that giving this very chic a red carpet moment at the AFI Awards luncheon would be a major moment for the brand, and a very chic look for Elisabeth. With a pair of two tone nude Schutz ‘Lisana’ sandals, wavy locks, a defined eye, and a burgundy lip I think that Lizzy would kick off her award season appearances in high style. Alexis Bledel took home an Emmy Award for her guest role in The Handmaid’s Tale and I think that we just may see her step out to help promote the series during Awards Season. Alexis has this very modest approach to lady like glamour on the red carpet and I am expecting to see some good things from her. For the AFI Awards I went to this navy Victoria Beckham Resort 2018 sleeveless a-line, floral print midi dress. This feminine dress is incredibly chic and can definitely see Alexis wearing this look for a casual appearance like the AFI Awards. I would imagine that Alexis would pair this dress with a jacket and I think that a black IRO frayed edge blazer would compliment the ladylike glamour of this look perfectly. Keeping the rest of the look pretty classic I would have Alexis pull her hair back into a ponytail, add a glossy pink lip, a black Victoria Beckham box tote, and a pair of nude Gianvito Rossi ‘Court’ pumps to really make this look work perfectly for the AFI Awards red carpet. I have already binged the whole new season of The Crown on Netflix and I loved it. Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II is amazing, but her grace and style as the queen don’t seem to translate to the red carpet all the time. I am hoping that Claire will up her game coming up and really start to deliver looks that flatter her height and curves, which one or the other tends to be the source of pain for me. For the AFI Awards I would love to see Claire step out to support her series wearing this black floral Monique Lhuillier Spring 2018 RTW ensemble which features a silk chiffon turtle neck draped blouse and straight leg pants paired with a crystal embellished belt. I think that this is a real fashion moment. Claire loves herself a floral print, and I think that this look is bold and feminine, and would compliment her current short dark locks perfectly. This look is bold, and some might be afraid to wear this look before noon. I think that Claire is one of those, but I think that this pushes the boundaries of her comfort zone in the perfect way possible. Paired with simple hair and makeup and a pair of dark navy velvet Tony Bianco ‘Karvan’ sandals Claire would have a major fashion hit on her hands. It isn’t very often we see superhero movies get love during award season, but it seems like everywhere I turn that Wonder Woman is getting some sort of love. This is making me real excited because I love Gal Gadot and I know that she will deliver some really great looks on the red carpet over the course of award season. For the AFI Awards, where the film has earned a spot on the 10 Best Films of 2018 list, I think that Gal could give us chic on the red carpet wearing this Givenchy Spring 2017 RTW ensemble which features a blue and red striped cropped sleeve logo sweater and a white mini skirt with pockets. The AFI Awards red carpet can appreciate a really good casual look. Gal loves a flat shoe (and at 5’10” she can get away with it) and while she hasn’t feared wearing a flat with a gown before, I think that this is one of the occasions that she can definitely get away with wearing them. I would love to see Gal wear this look with a pair of red Jimmy Choo ‘Vanessa’ ballerina flats, a nude glossy lip, and loose waves to really show her effortless style.A year ago I had no idea Millie Bobby Brown was. I hadn’t jumped onto the Stranger Things train yet. I saw her during award season wearing the standard looks that one expects a young teen to wear on the red carpet from Jenny Packham and Emporio Armani. Right after the SAG Awards she was front row at Raf Simons debut at Calvin Klein, and a young fashionista was born. Since that Millie has changed stylists and is now working with Emmy Rossum’s stylist Thomas Carter Phillips and has had major high fashion moments in brands like Kenzo, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Roksanda, Rodarte, and a whole lot more. For the AFI Awards I would love to see Millie expand her designer repertoire yet again and sink her teeth into Christian Dior. I think that this black leather overall inspired mini dress from the Christian Dior Spring 2018 RTW collection which features an embroidered heart and is layered over a black and red stripe jumper would definitely be a perfect, and age appropriate, look for the 13 year old budding fashionista. I put Millie in the same category as Yara Shahidi and Keirnan Shipka, but unlike them Millie has gotten her fashionista footing at an even younger age. I want to keep seeing Millie having fun with fashion, but I want her not to grow up too fast. I think that with a pair of black round toe Christian Louboutin ‘Madonaflor’ floral embellished block heel pumps, slicked back hair, and neutral makeup would all add the perfect youthful touches to this look.Octavia Spencer pretty much always sticks to being dressed by Tadashi Shoji. He was there when no one else wanted to dress her before her Oscar win, and she has been loyal to him ever since. There have been very few steps outside of Tadashi with brands like David Meister, Laura Basci, and Marchesa. Over the last year especially we have seen this wave of inclusion of women of all sizes in the fashion industry and I think that Octavia could honestly get almost any designer she wanted to dress her for the red carpet nowadays. I want to take my wishes to really pray for some fashion moments from Octavia over the course of award season, where she and her film The Shape of Water are both causing a lot of buzz. To celebrate the film at the AFI Awards I think Octavia would shut the red carpet down wearing this black pinstripe Monse Pre-Fall 2018 origami draped jumpsuit which features wide leg trousers and cap sleeves. This look screams boss to me and that is something that Octavia always evokes to me as well and I think that what better way to really kick off award season than wearing a killer look from a major designer. This look would only be enhanced with a sleek low bun, smokey eye, red lip, and a pair of silver Sergio Rossi mirrored triangle pumps.

The 2018 AFI Awards will take place on Friday January 5, 2018.
