2017 MTV Video Music Awards: Katy Perry Red Carpet Wish List

The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) are this Sunday night and I am getting really really excited about what all the stars are going to bring to the red carpet. The VMA’s is always one of the most varried and fun red carpets of the year. We see stars go long and dramatic with mile long trains or with jeans or micro mini dresses. One of the people that has a lot of pressure as to what she will wear during this years VMA’s is the shows hostess this year, Katy Perry. Katy Perry has been having a kinda reinvention of her style this year. Since bursting onto the scene we have seen her go from quirky glamour Katy to kitschy Katy to edgy Katy to demure Katy and now we are kinda seeing this very elevated mix of all of those together. Her looks recently have been making me fall back in love with her fashion choices, and I am praying that when she steps out on Sunday night that we see wall to wall amazing looks from Katy as she walks the VMA’s red carpet and takes the stage. For the red carpet I would love to see Katy really go for glam with this metallic grey feather embellished Ralph & Russo Fall 2017 Couture ‘mullet’ gown which features a major feathered halter neck and a silk waistband defining the waist. I usually dislike mullet dresses on the red carpet, but I think that for an event like the VMA’s that Katy could make this gown work on the red carpet. I think that if Katy paired this look with a smokey eye, deep red lip, an edgy diamond earcuff, and a pair of black Sophia Webster ‘Mila’ suede cutout peep-toe booties that she would kick off the evening in high style. I have heard a rumor that Katy is going to open the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards by performing. She is getting ready to drop a video for “Swish Swish” so I would imagine that is what we will see her do for her performance. Since the song has very sporty vibe about it I would bet that the performance would reflect that. With that in mind I went to the runways to find the perfect look for her to wear for her performance and when I saw this red, white, and blue Ashish Fall 2017 RTW sequined ensemble which features a zip up baseball jacket and mini dress I was immediately sold. We all know that Katy will get political at some point in the evening (maybe more than once) and I think that the subtle subtext of resistance behind the addition of “unfinished business” on the sleeves of the jacket would definitely appeal to her. When I watched the runway show I saw that the back of the jacket is emblazoned with the Dodgers (a baseball team) logo and since the video and song are more basketball inspired I think that Katy would want that changed (maybe with her name and a 17?) I would add even more sparkle to this look with a pair of multicolored sequin Christian Louboutin ‘Moulamax’ booties to make this look even more performance ready.

Following her performance I went for something majorly sexy and very dramatic for Katy to wear with this white skin tight Michael Costello Fall 2017 RTW long sleeve jumpsuit which features a plunging neckline and fringe along the bottom of the sleeves. I remember sitting front row at this show and seeing this dramatic look glide down the runway in front of me and being captivated. The look combines sex kitten, 70’s, and western all in one look. On paper that shouldn’t work, but Michael made it happen and I think Katy would make it even more dramatic. On the runway Michael paired his looks with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and I think that a pair of silver, crystal embellished Giuseppe Zanotti ‘Coline’ sandals would enhance this look.

We all know that at some point in the evening Katy will turn to her friend Jeremy Scott to dress her. I adore the Moschino Resort 2018 collection which took a very kitschy Vegas meets western route for its inspiration. I think that Katy would definitely be drawn to the sparkling nature of this blue, orange, and yellow flame emblazoned Moschino Resort 2018 fringe hemmed cocktail dress and I think that for a stage costume during the MTV Video Music Awards that this would be a perfect option. I would want the dress to be the focus of this look so I would add just a smokey eye, nude lip, and a pair of navy Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudistsong’ sparkling denim ankle wrap sandals.

Another brand that I am really expecting to see Katy wearing over the course of the evening on Sunday night is Alexandre Vauthier. She wore an electric blue 80’s inspired leather skirt suit to a press conference to hype her Witness tour and I think that the two are a match made in heaven. For the VMA’s stage I think that this black sweetheart neckline Alexandre Vauthier Fall 2017 RTW which features a red silk peplum and crystal embellishments would be a totally perfect moment for Katy to rock. The dress gives this 80’s rocker vibe and I think that with her short platinum hair, a lined eye, red lip, and a pair of red Schutz ‘Denitta’ fringed tassel accented ankle wrap satin pumps that Katy would definitely evoke the days of glam rock. This Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2017 Couture sheer color blocked tunic layered over a metallic blue body suit was the first thing I picked for Katy to wear during her time hosting the VMA’s this year. This look is modern and space age and I think that with the promos really playing up the whole “moonperson” vibe inspired by the awards iconic trophy that we will see Katy wear at least one look that gives us space age glamour. I think some sort of PVC clear sandals would really let the look speak on its own.

I went back to Katy’s friend Jeremy Scott for another look for her to wear during her hosting duties, but this time his eponymous collection. I the only gown I picked for Katy to wear on the stage over the course of the night is this gold tiger print embellished Jeremy Scott Fall 2017 RTW plunging neckline and a dramatic split. This look is just pure glamour with a quirk and I think that Katy would look incredibly sexy and elegant on the VMA’s stage. Adding to the 70’s glamour of this look I would add a pair of gold Aquazzura ‘Sundance Plateau” metallic platform sandals.

Like my feelings when I was sitting front row at the Michael Costello show I also had the same feelings when I was seated front row at the Pamella Roland Fall 2017 RTW show when I saw this onyx and moss 3D strapless organza bustier top with a chic train paired with black velvet pants walk the runway. My thought immediately went to the Grammy Awards that would take place just days later, sadly we haven’t seen it on a red carpet yet, but I think that Katy would give us the very 80’s moment this look calls for with a pair of green velvet Jimmy Choo ‘Annie’ sandals and a smokey emerald eye.

My final wish for Katy to wear to close the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards is one from one of her favorite designers when she wants to go for high glamour. I think that Katy would be so incredibly chic wearing this multicolored confetti sequin Elie Saab Resort 2018 long sleeve mini dress which features a jewel neckline and sheer details to close the show. This dress is sparkling and fun but also plays to that very chic and elegant party girl vibe. I think that if Katy paired this dress with a pair of purple satin Tom Ford bow detailed ankle strap sandals, a fuchsia lip, and smokey eye that she would have one final sartorial win while hosting the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.
