The 2017 Venice Film Festival premiere of Victoria & Abdul got a little more interesting with the announcement last week that the films director, Stephen Frears, will receive the Jeager-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker award immediately prior to the films premiere. The award honors filmmakers that are considered to have made an original contribution to innovation in contemporary cinema. I was starting to wonder if Dame Judi Dench would make the jaunt from her home to Venice to promote this film. For the most part Judi skips red carpets that are not based in London, even Oscar ceremonies where she is nominated. I would love to see Judi make the trip to Venice to support her longtime friend and director in several films be honored at the festival and to present Victoria & Abdul. For the films photocall I went to a very luxe, but classic look for Judi to wear thanks to this cream crocodile leather coat and glittering gold tapered pants from the Armani Prive Fall 2017 Couture collection. Judi does take a very layered approach to dressing for public appearances and I think that a look like this would be exactly what we are going to see her wearing on the photocall stage, if she stakes the trip of course. For the premiere I went to a look that I fell in love with while flipping through the online lookbooks of the couture collections. I think that Judi would look very chic wearing this emerald green Alexis Mabille Fall 2017 Couture evening suit which features a gold embroidered blazer, black shell top, and a flowing skirt. We tend to see Judi wear chic Indian inspired coats over simple dresses on the red carpet, so this ensemble is a break from her norm, but I think that for such a big occasion that it would make for something incredibly chic for her to wear. Because this event does hold the awarding of an honor I wonder if the jury will make an appearance. This award is not chosen by the members of the main competition jury but another governing board, but I think that since the main competition jury is the public face of the festival that we just may see them out on this red carpet. Jury president Annette Bening has some high expectations set on her because I know she has the potential to really deliver some great moments on the red carpet. For a big gala premiere like we are expecting the Victoria & Abdul premiere to be, I would love to see Annette deliver a bold and feminine look like this floral embroidered Elie Saab Fall 2016 Couture long sleeve gown which features a velvet belted waist and an a-line skirt. This is one of the looks from the Elie Saab Fall 2016 Couture collection that I am really surprised that someone like Sarah Jessica Parker or Helen Mirren has not snatched up for a red carpet, but I also think that Annette would look so incredibly chic wearing this gown on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival. Usually for big gala premieres I would want to see stars wearing dramatic and glamorous which feature big skirts and dramatic trains. But I have kinda flipped that on its head with my wishes for Anna Mouglalis and Rebecca Hall today. For this premiere I would really love to see Anna deliver a really major red carpet moment in this short black and white Chanel Spring 2016 Couture tea length gown which features a chic collar and a textured sparkling bodice. This look is definitely a modern take on the classic Chanel woman and I think that Anna would totally make this a major moment on the Venice Film Festival red carpet. With a tight, high bun, smokey eye, red lip, diamond cluster earrings, a black Chanel pumps, and a pair of black and white Chanel pumps this would be a totally beautiful moment on the red carpet. Rebecca Hall has the highest expectations out of any of the nominees of this years Venice Film Festival jury members. I know what potential she has and I think that with her access to some of the best fashion houses in the world and her statuesque/modelesque look to make some avant garde designs work on the red carpet. I think that Rebecca would definitely be the highlight of this red carpet wearing this red rectangle pailette embellished Valentino Resort 2018 floral midi cocktail dress which features cap sleeves and a shift like silhouette. This dress mixes fun and flirty 60’s style bohemian glamour and a more sporty style perfectly and I think that someone like Rebecca would just wear this dress with ease. I can picture her now standing on the red carpet on the Venice Lido wearing this gown with a loose wavy bob, smokey eye, red lip, a yellow clutch, and a pair of simple red sandals in a strong pose just exuding confidence and glamour.
The 2017 Venice Film Festival opens August 30, 2017 and runs through September 9, 2017.
