2017 Met Gala Red Carpet Wish List Part 9

By the end of this post we will finally have marked the halfway point in my Met Gala wishes on the road to this years Comme des Garçons/Rei Kawakubo themed gala which will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday in May. Blake Lively has attended several Met Gala’s (as she has become a personal friend of Anna Wintour’s) and has never had a misstep. She has been a guest of Versace, Marchesa, Chanel, Gucci (twice,) and Burberry. Each of these looks is absolute perfection and I j’adore seeing Blake on the red carpet. Last year it seemed like Blake was everywhere with promo tours for several films, but sadly this year we have only seen heron a red carpet once at the Golden Globe Awards. Before she jets off to Cannes for her duties as a spokesmodel for L’Oreal Paris I want to see Blake Lively hit the Met Gala red carpet. Blake is great friends with Donatella Versace and I have to say that I am surprised that she hasn’t worn the label since her first Met Gala in 2009. I would love to see the two attend this year with Blake wearing this absolutely gorgeous black cracked lattice lace gown from the Atelier Versace Spring 2017 Couture which features a feathered hem. I think that dark, edgy yet romantic gown would fit in perfectly with the Comme des Garçons theme and I know that Blake would just bring even more glamour to this look. I would counteract all of the edge on this design by having Blake style the look with old Hollywood waves draped over one shoulder, a winged eyeliner, bold red lip, diamond drop Lorraine Schwartz earrings, a dazzling diamond cuff, and a pair of black Christian Louboutin sandals.Over the last year Elle Fanning really embraced glamour and has come into her own. I used to find myself underwhelmed a lot of the time with Elle’s style and I would roll my eyes every time that I saw she was going to attend an event. It was at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of her film The Neon Demon in Zuhair Murad that my opinion of her changed. When I looked back at Elle’s past Met Gala looks I was reminded how much my opinion of her style has changed. In past year’s Elle has worn Valentino Couture, Rodarte, and custom Thakoon but none of them have truly wowed me in the past. Aside from her first gala in Valentino Couture all of Elle’s Met looks have been gowns. I decided to go the short route this year. I am usually very picky about short gowns on the Met Gala red carpet since Anna Wintour usually sets a white tie dress code, which means the bolder and bigger the gown the better, but sometimes a cocktail look can be perfection. I think that this over the top 3-D floral embroidered Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2017 RTW mini dress which features a crew neckline, cap sleeves, and a mini length is one of those perfect short gowns at the Met. A lot of times Dolce & Gabbana pulls out their grand over the top alta moda couture ball gowns for the Met, but I think that this cocktail ensemble could be just as magical as one of those creations and I think that Elle has brought the presence to the red carpet so far this year to really make this a major look on the red carpet. A pair of gold pumps, a top knot, lined eye, and a pink lip would make this look perfection. When I was looking back at all the times that the stars that I picked for my list I was actually really surprised by how many times Janelle Monae has been a guest. I found four past red carpets where Janelle was a guest. She has worn Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Tadashi Shoji, and H&M on the red carpet in the past and each stayed true to Janelle’s style while also seeing the growth that she has shown since she first emerged as someone to watch. After having two films nominated at the Academy Awards (and Moonlight winning Best Picture,) I think that it is a safe bet that Janelle will be invited back to the Met Gala again this year. I would love to see the Hollywood side of Janelle on the red carpet at this years Met Gala wearing this silver and black horizontal striped Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2017 Couture tea length gown which features a fluted silhouette, plunging neckline and subtle sparkle via liner beading. The gown is something totally within Janelle’s wheelhouse and I think that for the Met Gala that it would be absolutely amazing. Lily Collins has always been one of my favorite ladies to see on the red carpet and I figure that if invited she will truly amaze me. Lily has attended past Met Gala’s wearing Chanel (twice,) Valentino (twice,) and Moschino and I would think it is a safe bet that she will once again wear either Valentino or Chanel if she receives an invitation to this years gala. I went with a very bold choice with this tiara inspired Alexis Mabille tulle and lace trapeze dress from the label’s Spring 2017 Couture collection. There has never been an Alexis Mabille creation on the Met Gala red carpet, but I am always about expanding the labels that make it on the red carpet. With the darker vibes we are expected to see on the red carpet at this years gala because of the Comme des Garçons/Rei Kawakubo theme and I think that this would be a perfect interpenetration of that theme to fit Lily’s more feminine approach to red carpet dressing. I think that styling this dress with a pair of crustal embellished strappy sandals, a smokey eye, pinned back waves, a nude lip, and a pair of diamond cluster earrings would really make this a gorgeous first Met Gala moment for the Alexis Mabille Couture label. Reese Witherspoon’s best red carpet moment ever came from the 2014 Met Gala red carpet where she gave us modern old Hollywood head to toe in custom hot pink Stella McCartney. There was not a single hair out of place in that look and I think that is why I hold her to such a high standard. I know Reese can really wow me so when she consistently gives me the same look time after time I get frustrated. With the success of Big Little Lies buzzing a possible Emmy nomination I have a huge feeling that we will be seeing Reese keeping up appearances between now and then. I would love to see Reese take to the Met Gala red carpet wearing this black velvet Oscar de la Renta yellow flora embellished gown which features an asymmetrical one shoulder neckline, a fitted bodice, and a full mermaid skirt. This gown is feminine with a structure which I think bridges the divide between Reese’s very feminine style and the dark and edgy codes of Comme des Garçons. I would love to see Reese style this look with yellow diamond cluster earrings, a yellow satin clutch, a romantic updo, red lip, and a pair of black sandals to make this another top tier moment for Reese to wear on the red carpet. Thandie Newton got an award winning leading role in the hit HBO series wearing Westworld and then has had a reemergence on the fashion scene. Thandie made the best dressed lists at the Golden Globe Awards wearing Monse and the SAG Awards wearing Schiaparelli Couture and I am hoping that she will step out for this years Met Gala. The moment I saw this gold jacquard Vivienne Westwood Fall 2017 RTW column gown which features origami sleeves Thandie was the first person that came to my mind. I know that this is a pretty stereotypical Vivienne Westwood moment, which can be a bit of a bore, but I think that Thandie’s presence would really make it a totally major red carpet moment. Finishing this look with a chic updo, light smokey eye, nude lip, & a pair of gold pumps would really ensure that this gown is total perfection.

The 2017 Met Gala will take place on Monday May 1, 2017. I will be posting the red carpet looks in real time on my fashion ID Instagram account What They Are Wearing. Please follow along and join me!
