“The Birth of Light” was the title of the Elie Saab Spring 2017 Couture collection. Egypt has been a source of light and inspiration for civilizations; a guardian of Arab memory. For his Spring 2017 Couture collection Elie Saab pays tribute to the lush, glamorous heyday of the 40s to 60s with a modern reinterpretation of the female icons from that time, whose beauty and strength continue to inspire today. This collection was among one of the more straight glamour collection, as Saab is known for being the king of the red carpet. Paying tribute to the Arab film stars of the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s Mr Saab reveals a sharp and creative take on Oriental patterns and architectural lines that form symbols and star shapes, appearing on long, voluminous or mid-length dresses. Intricate embroidery illustrates palm trees that reflect the height and grace of those in Doumyat city while unforgettable scenes of boats dancing on the Nile recall, in a dream-like haze, the collection’s light, fluid fabrics that are constructed to float upon its breeze. Embroidery inspired by Arabic calligraphy also covers smooth and transparent fabrics such as tulle, lace and mousseline. Each gown decadently embellished as to appeal to the magpie within. My favorite look from this collection the sheer ballgown embellished and embroidered with scenes of boats on the Nile would be an amazing red carpet moment on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet on either Aishwarya Rai or Sonam Kapoor. Cannes, Oscars, Met, movie premieres, gala, and more are all events that come to mind as I saw this collection make it’s way down the runway. I would love to see a whole host of beautiful women including Petra Nemcova, Olga Kurlyenko, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alessandra Ambrosio, Fan Bingbing, Amanda Seyfried, Li Bingbing, Elle Fanning, Emmy Rossum, Taissa Farmiga, Margot Robbie, Carina Lau, Sarah Paulson, Dita Von Teese, Felicity Jones, Vera Farmiga, Emma Stone, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Madekwe, Jane Fonda, Jena Malone, Freida Pinto, Suki Waterhouse, Lupita Nyong’o, Taylor Swift, Bella Hadid, Nieves Alvarez, Naomi Watts, Olivia Wilde, Nina Dobrev, Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Kate Bosworth, Jessica Chastain, Monica Bellucci, Diane Kruger, Kate Beckinsale, Elizabeth Banks, Evan Rachel Wood, Eva Longoria, Rachel McAdams, Kirsten Dunst, Amber Heard, and Amy Adams wearing this collection on the red carpet.
