Opulence and Simplicity define the Schiaparelli label creative directors Bertrand Guyon’s really laid into that for the Spring 2017 Couture collection presented in Paris yesterday. I have been really taken with Schiaparelli since it came back to the couture circuit and this collection just continues with that love. New, modern takes on surrealism that Elsa Schiaparelli was known for was strewn throughout this collection, but in a way that was very elegant and wearable at the same time. That is a hard line to toe. Sometimes surrealism on the runway can boarder too avant garde or too costume-y, but this collection provided many wearable moments. House signatures like pierced hearts, padlocks, and sunbursts were center-stage with Japanese kimonos and Chinese hanfus (which were something that house founder Elsa Schiaparelli wore while lounging around at home.) The lobster is another classic Schiaparelli motif and the one painstakingly crafted from patched inserts strewn across an ivory one shoulder gown with a red waistband was one of the stand out looks, perfect for someone like Kate Beckinsale to wear on the red carpet. We don’t see a whole lot of Schiaparelli on the red carpet, and I think that the very visually striking styles have many stars staying away. Wearing these bold looks on the red carpet take someone with a lot of presence to really make them come to life. Priyanka Chopra, Chloe Grace Moretz, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Jane Fonda, Sarah Jessica Parker, Karlie Kloss, Jessica Chastain, Fan Bingbing, January Jones, Lea Seydoux, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ruby Rose, Lupita Nyong’o, Taylor Swift, Kate Bosworth, Diane Kruger, Melissa George, Carina Lau, Camilla Belle, Miley Cyrus, Juliette Binoche, Amy Adams, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Lindsey Wixson, and Lady Gaga are all the people who I can picture really bringing this collection to life on the red carpet. You can see all my favorite looks from the Spring/Summer 2017 Couture collections, and my immediate wishes of who I want to see wearing them on my Pinterest page.
